Fuel smell in oil (EcoBoost Maverick)

Hey folks,

This morning I did a quick check under the hood, air filter, fluid levels, etc. When I checked oil level I had no rag to wipe dipstick so I used my fingers. Oil level is good (monitor states 64% oil life), but when cleaning my hands the smell of gas was strong. The same smell I get when filling a chainsaw or lawnmower and spilling on my hands.

My last thirty years of vehicle ownership have been Dodge Hemi’s. I have no experience with Ford or turbos.
Is this typical of direct injection turbo engines or is something wrong?

Direct injection, yep normal.

Highest I've seen is 3.3% on an 8500 mile run on that oil, also the lowest viscosity results I've had.

Sadly is normal but not so good for your engine oil changes are a must at4k-5k synthetic

For ecoboost turbo engines.
Your Hybrid model can go a lot longer between oil changes than 4 - 5k on the odometer.

This is a chronic problem with Honda's turbo engine. It is a problem with the fuel injection pressure. Honda won't do anything about it for my brother-in-law. It is a scary situation.

yes. specifically, you want the engine oil temp to warm to at least 200F which takes at least 20 minutes of actual running, so this happens way after the coolant temp hits 4 bars. if you take short trips and have autostop enabled (which is the default) you might need to intentionally go on longer drives.

I have a Ranger, same system as yours but a 2.3, I don’t have any fuel smell in the oil, I do check it for this too, it’s a common problem with Di engines. If you’re still under warranty take it in, excessive fuel in the oil is damaging to your engine. Take it in to at least to get it in the system.

I've had my oil tested by Blackstone a couple times and it came back with 3.0% and 2.3%.

They report <2.0% is ideal. So yeah, it's been a little higher.

Typical of some DI turbo engines. Combo of high pressure DI and forced induction

Yikes. I can’t imagine driving my ecoboost 650 miles per week for work. At 25 mpg that would be 1,300 gallons of gas per year and where I live, gas is $5 a gallon, which works out to $6,200 per year. I just drive an ev for my work commute (100 miles per day) and let my solar panels pay for the energy used.

No need for batteries. That just adds expense. My setup was $22,000 after 30% federal tax rebate. It makes 21,300 kwh per year. where I live, that is $4,899 per year at the cheap night time rate. I’m in year 3 now, so $14,700 already recovered on investment. And I make more power than I use. Last year I got a $700 check from the power company.

This is normal across many platforms with gas turbo direct injection engines. Many volkswagens, Audis, Mercedes, Fords, etc will smell like fuel when changing the oil. As stated before, some fuel in the oil is normal for these type of engines. Engines with turbos generally run hotter and degrade oil quicker than non turbo engines as well.

These "Snob Hybrid Owners" love to boast about their engines not needing oil changes as often and their MPGs. Yet they fail to disclose the other failures and maintenance required with the hybrid system. To start, most of them don't even realize their Hybrid Maverick's have two separate cooling systems that will need two separate coolant flushes in the future. They also fail to realize that components of their voltage converter cannot be replaced and the converter itself must be replaced entirely. The system itself is much more complex, has had several more recalls (with subpar solutions) and lacks towing capacity and AWD.

Oh Yeah and the Axles failing every 40k miles on the hybrid version with no revisions by Ford and the grabby brakes problem.
