You might want to invest in a block heater.
Actually, forgot to order the block heater when I ordered this truck. In a couple more months I am done up here and headed back home, where they have no clue what a block heater is!

I also own a Honda CRV. The 2017 had such bad dilution that people ended up with a quart of gas or more in their oil. A software patch reduced it considerably But did not eliminate it.

There was a class action lawsuit against Honda because of this (lots of reading online but endless). Honda agreed to extend their warranty, nothing more. Lawyers got filthy rich.

Blackstone is a waste of money. I had at least a half quart of gas in my oil and they said I had almost none. They use a flash method of testing not actual scientific measuring.

Heating the oil to highway temps is the only way to burn it off. Gas in the oil is the result of gas being sprayed against the cylinder walls by the injector under high pressure. That’s what DI engines do.

Have fun.

Congratulations! Honestly, I'm not made of the right stuff to put up with that kind of cold.

Tbone, I'm beginning to think maybe I'm not either, but here I am. (insert banging head on wall here)

For those that do the OA's, how do you get the sample without going thru the motions of changing the oil. Draw it out of the dipstick tube somehow?

If it's when changing the oil, the testing for dilution would be after the fact, which is fine, but wouldn't save you any money by not changing it too early, since you just changed it?

Bob, do you know if it significantly shortened the CRV's engine life, or did they just keep ticking away like nothing was wrong?

I agree! I sample mine when I do an oil change. Let it run out into the pan for a little bit, then stick the sample bottle into the stream until it gets to the line. pull it out and cap bottle. Finish oil change as normal.

I would just take it during an OC the next time you're suspicious of dilution. Take it midstream as @Buckshot62 mentioned. Another option would be to pull the filter and pour it out from there, then top off after replacing the filter.

Just for git's and shiggle's, I thought I would see if I could put together something that could draw oil out thru the dipstick tube.

This is what I came up with and it worked great. If nothing else, it'll be useful for when the oil change dummy's put too much oil in the engine, which seems like about 50% of the time. It'll save me a trip back to have them drain some back out.

I used a pump made for oil and gas, and adapted it down to a 1/4" OD stiff plastic line. Slipped right down the dipstick tube and into the oil.

I don't know enough about OA's to know if this would introduce too much contamination from residual oil in the pump to be useful in getting an OA sample?

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Had to put on about twelve of them . . .

Escaped back to the desert, and all is well.

Set up so that the tube itself holds the fluid, and never reaches the pump. You're not going to lose much, I suspect, as you slide it out. Then cap with your thumb until release.

You could use a wider diameter tube for the segment that doesn't go into the dipstick to get it to hold more.

No, a catch can traps oil and crankcase vapors circulating through the PCV system. Fuel dilution is caused by fuel passing by the cylinder rings and into the crankcase.
Oil catch cans can help prevent oil contamination of a heat exchanger in a supercharger. The contamination reduces the efficiency of cooling by the intercooler. Since the 2.0 has a turbocharger if you install one it probably just looks pretty. :)

You're gonna be shocked to learn that turbocharged vehicles usually have intercoolers too.
