2022 XL Hybrid with~10k miles and no prior issues. Driving 70mph on freeway. Truck comes out of gear (knob is still on D but light is flashing red instead of solid red). Above message on dash. Pull over & stop. Series of additional error messages serially display (Hill start assist not available, Service advance trac, Service vehicle soon). Turn truck off then on again. Put in D and the truck will accelerate on its own to 35mph only despite fully depressed gas pedal. Heavy braking required to stop and when brake is released it will accelerate to 35mph without applying gas pedal. Stangely if I take the key out and let it shut down and wait about 15 minutes it will start to drive normally again, albeit with the check engine light on. It’s been to 5 different dealers in the past 2 months (seems to only happen when we’re on I5 between Portland and San Francisco) where they generally just do the recall updates and fix the error codes but the problem has never been fixed. Seems to happen every 50-200 miles. Now I just turn the thing off until it resets and then keep going. I’ve got a case number from Ford and it’s at my local dealer (again) for assessment. Has anybody experienced anything like this? Any ideas?

I've seen it pop up elsewhere in the forums, one of the common threads is that the issue seems to pop up after getting recall updates done to the PCM and BCM. Based on the symptoms, it seems to fall within NHTSA recall 24V-267.

There's two issues: a bad 12v system and faulty software detection/reaction. If the 12v system drops unexpectedly, the truck freaks out and goes into limp mode (comes out of gear and limits the max speed). Even if the voltage goes back up, it'll maintain the limp state until the codes are cleared manually or it self-checks going from standby to drive mode. Since it usually takes about 10-15min after turning off the truck for it to go into standby mode, that matches the timeline you described.

In terms of the bad 12v system, there's a few areas it could be coming from:
  1. Bad 12v battery
  2. Poor 12v battery crimps
  3. Dirt and debris caught between the fuse block busbar assembly ()

Note: I'm not sure where the self-acceleration comes from, but you're not the only one it's happened to. I highly recommend submitting a report to: https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#vehicle

This is incredibly helpful. Thanks. I’ll discuss all these things with the dealer.

Hi Darnon:

Thanks a million for this. Hard to believe that none of the dealers were aware of this…..included central Ford customer service center. Now I have something for the dealer to fix!!!
The recall at the beginning of April fixes this. This was a BIG issue from February to mid-March of this year. All over the web, in the news and of course in here (MaverickTruckClub). Hopefully your dealership will read up on this and do it correctly.

Isn't it sad how clueless some dealers are ?

Late April I experienced this same type of issue- 3 days prior to my first encounter I came across this recall with similar info- 3 days later it happened to me while on I-285 in Georgia, going 78mph- all of a sudden. I felt the drop in speed while watching my speedometer cont to drop. Which was pretty scary and dangerous being that I had to try and take whatever gap in traffic flow I could get, because not being able to accelerate is a whole nightmare in itself. Power train fault, service engine soon, collision assist fault ect. Well I still managed to flow to work @ 33mph since I was 1 exit away- got it towed to dealer- I mentioned the recalls that this was I reference to but of course - communication wasn't sent to customers ahead of time even alert, but yet and still people managed to make youtube video about the issue itself. Dealer kept for 2weeks- got back and 2 days later same exact issue- this time it was even more busy on freeway and even more stress- it went back to dealer again- this time they eventually got the recall and fixed the issue- I asked them to keep vehicle and drive at least 100miles- to ensure this would not happen again- noticed they fixed Pcm & Bcm as well as the battery so yes it has a new battery. Was very skeptical when 1st received it back- I was ready to do a buy back because my life is worth more than a vehicle and the issues where becoming overwhelming- thus far I have driven it at different speeds and plenty of miles have been tested- it looks good and sounds good but I still have that hesitation in my gut not sure how Ling b4 I can relax. I hope your dealers can get you squared away and stay on them to make sure it's done correctly. Your life matters!!

On the freeway in ATL is one of the last places I'd want a car to go limp like that. It's a safety hazard in many ways, not just because of the high speed traffic, but if you happen to be travelling through the wrong neighborhood, you are at risk of other issues as well.

Perhaps this huge lurch towards 'drive by wire' is a bad move. Are other brands having these issues as well?
