Call up Charlie at Moyer Ford in Foley, Alabama. Pretty close to Mobile and they’ve done us right on all three Mavericks we bought from there.

Local Porsche dealer uses for all their vehicles and it's "included" in the sale. For a $100K-$300K vehicle it's a fantastic system with an enormous amount of data, geofencing and other features. I felt the inclusion on my Porsche was justified and MSRP/Negotiation on most of these cars isn't really a thing (years wait for some cars).

For a Ford Maverick, I agree it's pure profit for the dealership.

As pertains to "data"...
My other car is a Volvo. When we purchased it and contacted insurance, they wanted to know how many miles per year we were going to drive with the car.
I told them less than 10,000, which was true.
2yrs went by and grandbabies appeared 300mi away :) Very joyous event!

A year later, the insurance company reached out and said "We've become aware that your annual mileage is well above 10,000. Based on this, your new rate for this vehicle will be $XXX. If you wish to provide documentation to the contrary, please let us know."

My first thought was the dealership that does the service, but when I spoke with them about it, they showed me in writing that they do NOT sell customer data to anyone.

I think the only other entity that would know about the actual mileage is the State of Maine, through it's registration and inspection system. So did the state sell it?...must have.
that doesn't mean that they don't 'give away' your data for 'free' - them saying they don't 'sell it' really doesn't mean anything.

That's ridiculous. An Apple tag costs practically nothing and can be used the same way.

Very likely, Ford Corporate sold your driving data to your insurance company. You agreed to it with the Ford Pass Terms of Service. Ford is actually better than most companies. With GM and Toyota, data collection and distribution is manditory. Ford lets you opt out by not installing Ford Pass on your phone and not activating the modem in your Maverick.

Here’s an excerpt from a NYT article. The article is mostly about GM, but Ford is mentioned:

“In recent years, insurance companies have offered incentives to people who install dongles in their cars or download smartphone apps that monitor their driving, including how much they drive, how fast they take corners, how hard they hit the brakes and whether they speed. But “drivers are historically reluctant to participate in these programs,” as Ford Motor put it in a patent application that describes what is happening instead: Car companies are collecting information directly from internet-connected vehicles for use by the insurance industry.”

Here’s an archive of the article, so you won’t hit the NYT pay wall:

Lol I can only imagine what they think when they see to driving habits of my gt500. That thing has been over 180 more than once and I’ve only got 1200 miles on it. Or when they see top speed off over 130mph in my maverick. Ha Suck it trebek

These trackers are usually only "mandatory" if you are financing through the dealership and have poor credit. Are you financing through the dealer? Do you have poor credit?
They did not ask, but no, I'm not financing or anything like that. They said they put the tracker on "all new cars they sell".

Looks like there's more than one dealer in Mobile...
I'm not (necessarily) looking for a dealer in the Mobile AL area. We are moving, so I have been looking at a lot of dealers far and wide through many states we would be passing through on our move. ;)

Here’s the biggest problem: Some unskilled “tech” cuts into your factory wiring when installing these profit boxes. Bound to cause some kind of problem down the road. Even worse, they usually get installed in all the arriving vehicles at some dealerships, so even if you succeed in having it removed, the wiring damage has already been done.

Walk away from any dealer pushing these devices.

On my truck, they stripped wires behind the OBD2 port. No taps, no solder - they just wrapped the wires and taped it up. Ridiculous on conductors in a vehicle, much less ones that are powered at all times.

Unfortunately I bought used so I don’t have much recourse other than to mop up the mess myself.

This didn't happen with my Ford, it happened with my Volvo, and I was shown, in writing, that Volvo doesn't sell the data. I believe the state sold my data.

One dealer would not deliver the truck until they installed this. I argued that I did not want it. The other dealer put one in and had no intention of delivering my truck to me. I did not pay for either alarm. Pictures in my thread

On the '22 EB I purchased in 9/22 off the lot while I waited 18 months for my hybrid order to fill as a '24 hybrid, the dealer had the tracker already installed and I paid $1800 ADM, additional dealer markup, in the frenzy of us early adopters. [Besides the tracker, it included invisible paint protection, film under the door handles and other useless to me items]

The dealer was in a working class area where the majority of purchases are financed. The tracker is used to locate the vehicle and reposses it since they don't have, or shouldn't have, access to your FordPass app.

My insurance company, Allstate, offered me the option to install their tracker dongle but I refused.

For years prior to renewal, Allstate has sent me a questionaire by mail asking the use [work, pleasure, school] who drives it [anyone under 25 years old] and current mileage.

Buy a $25 Apple Air Tag or four for $80 and track your vehicle your self. Tell the dealer you don’t need them to surveil your truck
