Flushing my Mav and getting a Toyota

I just cant see getting into a Tacoma because of the fuel economy. So I chose a non hybrid Rav 4 adventure it gets 33 hwy which is close enough for me to my MAV that got between 38 and 39. Overall I feel that for long term ownership a hybrid doesn't make since for me unless gas gets to over $6 dollars a gallon. I had a 96 Rav4 back in the day and it was a tank! Time will tell.

Let us know if you get those kind of fuel mileage numbers

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences. I agree that without a good dealership/trained techs, it sucks not having them find the issue when you put a lot of time/hours into it and know something is wrong. A good dealership should have figured it out and correctly fixed it and not kick the can down the road.

I at the same time feel that a brand new vehicle to market (not just a refreshed exterior/looks) should have a few issues as its a brand new vehicle and when mass amounts of them finally hit the road, issues will be found...then fixed and future years should not have issues.

I just did a quick search for recalls via Toyota and there are a few on their 22/23/24 vehicles....which they have had on the road for decades. Those recalls in my eyes shouldn't happen because the vehicle has been on the market for that long now.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturer (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tacoma vehicles. The axle shaft sub-assembly may separate from the axle housing due to debris causing improperly secured fasteners. Axle shaft separation can cause a loss of vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

This design just got a 2024 redesign and was being built from 2016-2024. So the final year or so out of 8 of that design, and still having significant issues like that should not happen in my eyes.

But either way, I hope that your new Rav4 never has any issues for you and it does seem like a pretty sweet SUV. Best of luck for you!

Sorry to see you go, but completely understand. Hopefully you'll have a better experience. Unfortunately, I'm hearing more and more that Toyota's reputation for reliability isn't as strong as it once was. All the best to you

Yeah especially the 2010 Corollas, my mother in law drives one and that thing is a turd. Window switches falling into door panel, security light on but car still satrs maintenance light won't reset, seats not comfortable, transmission randomly shifts hard, our 2005 Civic is hands down a better built vehicle build quality wise, now is it underpowered definitely compared to modern cars yeah.

Can't go wrong with Toyota, though at twice the money, I hope it is twice the truck! I do agree with you that they don't seem to be as concerned with mpg as you and I are. We had a good run with Mazda pickups a while back....actually went to buy a Tacoma, but the identical Mazda was exactly $4,000 less back when 20K bought a lot of truck. I am glad that to get 4WD, we had to switch to a 2.0 rather than the hybrid we started after, as it seems that many have had some very frustrating problems. Bottom line, good luck with the Rav!!!!

Mine does the surging when slowing almost to stop too. Seems to do it once or twice and then not any more that trip. It feels really harsh, I worry about mechanical stress/failure on the transmission.

Yesterday almost caused me to rear end the vehicle in front of me. I wonder how many have this issue. Doing a search it seems many do. Ie "normal operation".

We have a Prius and it has never done anything of the sort.

Mine would keep doing it like it was switching back and forth and it wouldn't stop till I pulled over and shut it off then re-start it. Never threw a code though.

I have to agree that the civic has to be one of the best rigs on the planet, but my son in law has 450,000 miles on his Camry with the original motor..... hard to argue with that!

Is this Rav4 a new one? used? how does it compare price wise to the Mav?

I found a 2019 with 27k on the clock one owner for $27k Its a well optioned Adventure model so I can finally tow My tent trailer again, just need to add trailer brakes to it.

The marketing and research industry is full of companies who will conduct a survey to determine that 'nine out of ten doctors recommend Brand X'. The research is fake, it's paid for by the company but you can use it in your advertising which is why companies do it.

J.D. Power have a business model where they do surveys and then companies pay them to see the results. In theory it should mean that you can trust the results more and J.D. Power realized that this trust was worth something, so they started doing surveys on products and then going to the winner and saying to them, 'Hey, you came first in our survey, if you pay us money you're allowed to tell your customers that you came first'

Also to note there is the buyers mentality psychology, I don't care to go into details but people who know understand what I am talking about.

I had a B2000 back in the day. I paid 3k for it with 100k on the odometer. I put 300k more on it and sold it for 3k. Trucks in my area always sell for a lot. Those old rotary engines were bullet proof.

I will, although I may not be the best example for you. I tend to set my cruise at 60 and sit in the slow lane. I tend to get very good mileage. Like with my Mav I got 39 in the winter and 38 in the summer. All of which were freeway miles.

I understand what you are saying, but this new C2 platform (from my quick research) was created in 2018ish. Which one would say "yeah thats been around for 6years now" but here are the vehicles and years they have been on that platform..

• Ford Focus (fourth generation) (C519; 2018–present)
• Ford Escape (fourth generation)/Kuga (third generation) (CX482; 2019–present)
• Ford Bronco Sport (CX430; 2020–present)
• Ford Maverick (P758; 2021–present)
• Ford Evos (2021–present)
• Ford Mondeo (China) (2022–present)
• Ford Edge L (2023–present)
• Lincoln Corsair (CX483; 2019–present)
• Lincoln Z (2022–present)
• Lincoln Nautilus (2023–present)

So some of those are foreign market vehicles with possibly different parts/rules/safety regs,etc, but I feel that around 2021 was the point in time where the C2 platform was hitting the road in volume. So to me less than 3 years of high volume of vehicles on a brand new platform is sure to show issues (which we are seeing). With the outlier being the Focus and Escape which they killed off the Focus in US in 2022...so longest vehicle on the C2 in the US is the Escape. So not defending crappy engineering or parts or nothing, but a brand new platform finally getting tons of vehicles on the road with it, has been showing issues from it. Lets hope they figure them out and make correct changes.

Around 1993, say a Mazda B2600i versus a Toyota pickup?

Our family went with the Mazda, too. It was an amazing truck that just went forever and didn't have a single issue, we probably should have kept it in the family. Although, I want to say that in our case we came in closer to $6,000 less because Toyotas have always commanded a premium here. Above what might be considered the already applicable premium.

Thankfully I have had no real issues so far in my 10K miles, and hope that I don't. I am however not overly confident I wont which is why I got a 125K mile warranty.

Well, look at it this way...everyone buying the new 4 cylinder turbo Tacoma is either going to love it or hate it, and time will tell if Toyota made the smart choice in no longer offering the Tacoma as a 6 cylinder. They need to be careful with what they do to the future 4Runner as well - they may very well have f'ed up two of their lineup offerings. Sit back and watch and see what happens.
