No there not turning. Only when the AWD module commands the front power take off to connect the dog clutch in the transmission only then the rear drive shaft will transmit power to the RDU. That will most likely be in all modes except Normal and Economy. That's why there is not a screen on your dash to show power distribution to each axle. It only appears when you're in sand ,slippery. You might mean that axles are spinning.
Hmmm, after doing more searching it appears you're right. I'm more familiar with the older Ford pinion torque coupling style. And now for the Maverick they're utilizing AAM's EcoTrac system which can disengage the driveshaft within the PTU. Although it should still be seeing utilization to the rear wheels even in normal mode.

By reducing the drag that go's along with moving the rear drive train Ford is able to squeeze out more mileage from their Eco Boost engines.

It absolutely will hook up in normal mode.

I’m going to speak strongly about this. With myself and others finding their PTU’s under filled, lots of metal debris and the fluid of very bad condition (mine was more than 50% underfilled!). There being no real break-in procedure for the 2.0 EB engine (Ford doesn’t put in break-in oil at the factory). The color of the transmission fluid i just changed at 5800 miles. Everyone! Please listen to me. Change your engine, PTU, transmission & RDU at at east 5000 miles If not change the PTU oil as soon as you take delivery. Don’t rely on the warranty to make things right. The PTU underfiling and the transmission fluid issues are things that will surely prematurely fail after our warranty ends. I personally want my Maverick to last a long time. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.

Have no clue what PTU, ECVT, or RDU stands for. I know what AWD means. Not everyone is a mechanic.

Any thoughts on the ECVT oil? I changed my engine oil at 1500 miles and now I have 5000 miles on it. Thanks
My understanding is The ECVT Is not slated for a recommended flush service until 150K miles. If anything needs to be done to it way earlier than that, there is a serious issue IMO

True! however, doing a lot of towing and AWDing with your PTU underfilled is pretty much a death sentence to the PTU if it is finally brought from 48% filled to the 100% level at the 1st recommended PTU oil change interval. I hope Ford is listening to me. I can almost guarantee that premature PTU failures will start to happen here pretty soon for some.
Daniel Deliverz on youtube had a transmission failure at 80,000 miles, mostly highway miles from what I can figure but still a bit worrying.

I'm of the opinion that fluid changes are the cheapest maintenance you can do to a vehicle, and the most important, so I do em early and often.
What's $30 of oil compared to a $10,000 bill for a new motor?

Just a note of warning. Tranny fluid color is NOT a good indication of the state of the fluid in your Ecoboost transmission. Things have changed since the 70s. You can change that fluid over and over and it WILL always come out black after driving it a very short period of time. The tranny fluid will turn black in these trannys and it is the natural color of the fluid once it circulates around and there is nothing wrong with it.
This was a common misconception back in 2013 when the Escapes owners first changed their fluids very early and complained about the color of the fluid. Many kept changing it repeatedly after short cycles trying to get all the black out to get that reddish tint during inspections. They NEVER did! That red fluid was turning black as soon as it cycled so they were just wasting gallons of new tranny fluid in their fruitless attempts. The same will apply to these Maverick Ecoboosts. If you want to change your fluid on your own don't go more than 3 drains and refills at the most and that should be a very good change. Final level is measured at side plug with engine running....or measure and reinstall an exact amount of new fluid that you removed via the tranny air vent on the top of the engine using a funnel!

If you watch his early videos you will see why his transmission failed. He abused that truck pretty bad.

I can select that screen in all modes on my Lariat FX4. In normal mode the screen clearly shows power to the rear wheels during acceleration from a stop. All Fwd when cruising.

********More baloney from a worry wart.
Daniel did not have a transmission failure. it was a broken wire and hard to diagnose. Probably snagged plowing into heavy snow or some other stuff he had fun doing in his videos. Our cobalt had the same issue. Was stolen then found all beat up. Chevy went as far as pulling it just like in Daniels case. Took a LOT of effort and time to figure it out.

The dealership will probably not notice or record the amount of oil drained and/or do a lab test on the oil/investigate if they do find that it was underfilled. You may never know unless you do it yourself.
The point is having it serviced at or before 10k miles so that is done at the dealership.

I agree that "fluid changes are the cheapest maintenance you can do", but that statement doesn't give anyone a sense of how often those changes should occur. Why not change them all once a month?
