The front bumper is held on with two plastic clips in engine bay, plastic rivets and one screw on either side of the fender. The front bumper and the plastic grill over the radiator are attached to each other with plastic as well.So there's nothing of rigidity behind the plastic bumpers that would be able to support the metal bumper?

There are certainly attachments to the unibody structure that would support a steel bumper. However you'll be replacing a lot of front plastic fascia to accomplish it - and the rigidity of a unibody vehicle with designed crumple zones would more or less render a steel bumper not very functional as a hard hit to the bumper would cause damage to the unibody.So there's nothing of rigidity behind the plastic bumpers that would be able to support the metal bumper?
