Does anyone make steel bumpers for the Mavericks like they do for the Jeeps?

So they can tear the sheet metal they are bolted to?

So there's nothing of rigidity behind the plastic bumpers that would be able to support the metal bumper?
That sucks
The front bumper is held on with two plastic clips in engine bay, plastic rivets and one screw on either side of the fender. The front bumper and the plastic grill over the radiator are attached to each other with plastic as well.

There are certainly attachments to the unibody structure that would support a steel bumper. However you'll be replacing a lot of front plastic fascia to accomplish it - and the rigidity of a unibody vehicle with designed crumple zones would more or less render a steel bumper not very functional as a hard hit to the bumper would cause damage to the unibody.

There are plentiful examples of folks being rear ended at modest speeds with massive repair bills, or flat out being totaled.

Not really. Trucks with tow hooks are set up better, but you can't even add those to a truck that didn't have them easily.

There was a guy who made aluminum bumpers for his, but he has been quiet about it.

I think the real problem with today's unibodies is that the grade of the sheet metal is so light duty to start with. MOPAR used nothing but unibodies on its cars for years, many smaller Ford's have been unibody from the original Mustang to the later Lincoln Mark VIII's. Many of these cars had rugged steel bumpers that might even take a bump. Remember the early eighties when we had impact standards? Many cars were unibody even by then. Today's unibody vehicles could have a metal bumper at the expense of much added weight. It would be a bad idea to think adding a metal bumper to a modern unibody would do much for durability beyond sticks and stones. It would need to be engineered into the design.
