This is a decision you should of made before you ordered. Now you've taken someone else's turn in getting an ordered Maverick that they have waited for.

ALL vehicles have recalls. Honda just had a big recall (303,000) on HR-Vs and Accords for defective seat belts. All hybrids have had problems with deep sleep and battery issues.
I don't think all hybrids have deep sleep and battery issues. I dont. "All" is a pretty strong word. Ecoboost have the same issue.
Cheers

So, I ordered a '24 Hybrid XLT back in August and I was very surprised to get a build date email yesterday (February 2024). But--in part because I expected more like a year's wait--I've been looking at Foresters and especially CR-V Hybrids instead these past few months.

While I've always wanted a truck (and not a huge one, which is why I was so excited about the Maverick and the hybrid), I'm getting cold feet for a couple reasons and would welcome some perspective from current Maverick owners to help me decide whether or not to go with the Maverick. I'll outline my main thoughts below:
  • I'm not not sure how well the Hybrid (no AWD) will do in the snow, which we get a few times a year in my area (southern Ohio). I know it's not rear-wheel drive and we don't get a ton of really bad snow (usually!) but I do think an AWD (and especially a Subaru) would have the edge. I didn't order an EB because I wanted the fuel economy of the hybrid. How has your Maverick hybrid done in the winter? ,
  • I'm not sure how practical the Maverick is for a family of three (including a toddler still in a carseat), in part because it doesn't seem like there's much cargo space (aside from the bed, which is of course exposed to the rain, and because I've seen on here that carseat space is very limited. How has the Maverick worked as a family vehicle for you?
  • Finally, I'm a little concerned about the overall build quality/reliability of the Maverick. I know people tend to post more complaints than praise in general, but seems the CRV-V hybrid and Forester are more reliable and, overall, better built/more comfortable (especially the CR-V hybrid). I worry about the deep sleep issue, the recalls, etc. I've always owned Toyotas and Hondas and really appreciate a reliable vehicle I can keep for 10+ years.
Thanks for any thoughts and perspective! This forum has been very helpful.
Well, I ordered my hybrid Oct 2022, received it May 2023, drove it two months, and its been in the shop the last five months because no one knows what is wrong or how to fix it. Issue with deep sleep mode and the 12V battery charging. Warnings about the PCM not having correct voltage. They have replaced everything except the 400V battery. Ford engineers have been involved. It seems like they are just guessing, moving from the least expensive or easiest part to replace part to the most.... battery, fuse, cable, dc/dc converter...had to wait months for that. Now a Ford engineer is coming out again next week.

Have to admit I'm a bit jealous that you have a build date. Ordered a 23 XLT hybrid in Sept. 2022. That got changed to a 24 in July of this year, and still waiting. Email from Ford 2 days ago said, so sorry,.... 2 months ago my dealer took a 23 Lariat hybrid in trade. Love, love love it! But I'm semi-retired, no kids at home. My 3 grands (10, 9 and 6) fit just fine, and my bed cover keeps things in back clean and dry. That said, it's not my only vehicle, and we have not made any serious trips with the kids yet. Matter of choice and what you are comfortable with. BTW, I've never been stuck in snow with a front wheel drive, and have lived in snowy areas.

Very pleased with my maverick so far.it has exceeded my expectations. Having said that ,the last 2 Honda's I have owned,an 07 accord and 09 CRV both had a bad transmission shudder,so I didn't look at another Honda. I know my maverick is only a year old.hope it's as good as my dodges!

My opinion. It's a 4 door truck BUT with a kid nothing will beat the versatility of a van or an SUV (even a 2 row) as your primary family hauler.

Given the choices you listed and if I was buying my first family vehicle it would be CRV. Maverick would be for the spouse and not used as the primary. You want space, and easy access to cargo.

This might get a lot of hate, but just my honest opinion.
I haven't read any of the other responses after this one yet. I think your response, however, is spot on.

My needs are very different -- I am an empty nester who is still active with AYSO soccer in Orange County, California. As such, I need to be able to haul around large Bownet goals, Ez-Ups, etc. in the back of the Maverick. Unfortunately, the bed is too short to be practical -- I need one more foot (5.5 feet or longer bed).

I have no need for the back seat since I rarely - if ever - have more than one passenger.

I drove a rented Ford Edge across the country (California to North Carolina and back) and loved it. If I could get enough by selling my Maverick, I would sell it to get a mid or full-size SUV or full-size pickup.

The Maverick is great and I like the EB AWD much better than the hybrid. Yet, given the criteria you shared with us, I would go with the Honda or Toyota SUV.

As far s the use of a pickup, I just got a load of gravel for a parking spot by our garage, got some compost/soil material for the wife, not in bags, got a load of flooring packages for my neighbor, went to the dumps with a load of stuff...etc. Does that help? O, had a 4x6 utility trailer...the son in law forgot to put a lock on it when he borrowed it,,,stolen.

I'm a firefighter/paramedic who works on a technical rescue team. A lot of our rescues are in the mountains in bad weather. My last car I call a micro-van (Mazda 5) got up slippery hills better than many of the other members with pick ups, SUVs, 4x4s,Jeeps, etc. The difference is good snow tires. If you are going to spend any significant time driving in snow this is a bigger factor than AWD or 4WD. Of course put snows on them and they will be even better.

My two sons are grown now and besides the Mazda we also had a CRV. In my opinion a mini-van wins hands down for a family hauler. Sliding rear doors make get kids in so much easier.

I also miss the van for getting at my tools and equipment for work. The hatch in the back keeps me dry when doing things in the back. When I had the seats down in the van (quite often) it is much easier to get things up front compared to reaching over the bed or getting in the bed of the truck for heavier items.

I'm also a certified car seat installer. SUVs and Minivans are so much easier to get car seats properly placed and secured than pick up trucks. The very upright seating position of trucks makes them more timely and difficult (not impossible) to get correct.

Every vehicle has its pros and cons. In my opinion, I wouldn't use a truck as my primary family vehicle, even a bigger truck. Mini-van would be my first choice. Although, they are more expensive than the vehicles you are considering. If course your wife could get the minivan and you get the truck😁

BTW, I have only had my 23 XLT hybrid for a month and a half. There are definitely advantages to a truck and I seem to be downing trucks. That is not the case but there are pros and cons and having a bed is extremely useful at times. Everyone has to decide which vehicle best suits their situation.

how tall are the daughters? I'm a littler over 6' and I find it pretty reasonable. maybe not for a long trip but medium length trip no big deal.
I am 5’10, daughters and wife are 5’6 and 5’11. It’s no F-150 Supercrew which has a ballroom size back seat but comfortable enough for mid range trips.

FWIW, I'm 6'1" and wife is 5'9". Kids (11 and 8) are really tall for their age. I wouldn't want to sit in the back for extended periods, but there's as much room in the back seat as there is in our VW jetta.

I have a ‘23 Lariat Tremor that I use for work and have put 10k miles on in 4 months. Absolutely love the truck and am very happy with my decision. I have been a truck person for many years and have owned All types from compacts to a 1 ton diesel. My wife loves and owns an SUV but has also owned a few minivans in the past. IMO a minivan is overkill unless you have more then 2 kids.
Personally if you live in a snowy climate I would go AWD all day. My tremor gets 25-26 mpg and non tremors AWD EB gets close to 30 mpg. Yes you can put snow tires on and get around ok but it becomes a pain switching out every season(been there and it gets old). I have a 5 year old who is in a car seat and there are no issues with room at all.
I have hauled more things in the bed of my Tremor than I had in my 1 ton diesel.
If you need to tow more then get the 4k package. Overall I’m very impressed with this truck between mpg, versatility, ride quality and looks it would be hard for me to choose something else if I had to switch out. I checked out the ridge line, Tacoma, Colorado and gladiator all of which have their pros And cons.
As far as build quality time will tell and every manufacturer has their issues.
Good luck on your decision, hope this helps.

I live in Michigan and have had my Maverick XLT Hybrid since first week of Feb. I have 12,000 miles on it. Total Average MPG calculated manually is 48.6 mpg . 2 Major road trips down south. The ride is very smooth and quiet. When hualing large loads in bed, and it is put in Haul mode, the truck goes into gas with electric support and the mileage is fantastic and so is the ride. It's like the truck feels different.
I have had no issues with the quality. Cabin is very large truck feel width wise. Telescoping sterring wheel makes it great for transitioning between tall and short drivers.
Driving in snow. I have had no issues even in an ice storm.

Family truck I cannot speak to in regards to young children. However, it has more space in back then what I drove when my child was young.

Storage: If you get a realiable bed cover, you should be okay. The bed height is perfect for reaching in from all angles to retreive items.

I noticed when driving in the mountains and hills of Kentucky and Tennessee, the MPG actually was better then my daily city communting (surface streets/little freeway). When going down hills, I have not needed to go into low gear since the truck charges as it goes down and feels like engine braking.

Overall, I have had a great experience with the truck. The only complaint is the orange accent colors inside the XLT. I wish it were black or color matched to the exterior.

Advice: if you do get it, on those below zero days when first starting in the morning and defrosting windows, start with a lower temp and gradually increase. The heat that comes out is almost instant and I am causious to avoid the windsheild stress cracking from going from ice on windsheild to immediate high heat on the glass. Same but opposite in high heat days.

Bingo, I've never had this issue with mine, and my Maverick has sat at the airport for 2 weeks on multiple occasions.

first off on fwd hybrid in the snow. Grew up in Philly area I was driving a rwd Volvo wagon and a blizzard (30+” forecasted)….drove down and back to VA during that storm with no traction issues at all…..because I had 4 snow tires . 2nd the recalls….my 22 Mav had 2 recalls, now upgraded to a 24 and would suspect 99% recall issues have been corrected…..Honda and Toyota have recalls as well. Build quality? I believe the Hermasillo, MX factory was recently written as one of the better quality control auto factories. Many auto manufacturers (BMW included) have factories in MX. (Hermasillo & Monterrey). Lastly I like the style and functionality of a small truck….but it’s your call.

That’s an easy decision. If you don’t need the bed, get the CR-V Hybrid. I have a Ford Edge SUV (company car) and if I had to pick one, I’ll choose the SUV. More practical when you don’t want to get your stuff wet or dirty. Even with tonneau cover, things will get dusty / wet.

FWD Maverick hybrid is fine in winter. I am in Columbus, OH. Now if it was the Ecoboost Maverick then yes, AWD is better. I have a FWD Ford Edge and in slippery conditions it just spins the front tire(s). I find that annoying.

Quality? I have lots of squeaks and rattles from the cheap interior plastics and they scratch so easily. The most basic CR-V won’t have this problem.
