I can count on one hand the times I've used a parking brake in the last 30 years.
Same here except on manual transmission cars. I have used the " emergency brake" more than once to get me to a safe place when I have has a brake line rupture. Can't do that now.

edited my post with clarification.

That is only the disclaimer for how to automatically release it. Page 194 refers to the normal, manual release.

Crazy! I find it interesting they put it as a warning though.

I was always under the impression a parking brake was to help prevent accidents like mashing on the gas and rolling forward as part of its features lol.

Never argue with a FORD engineer ;)

I still need to know why. Why FORD... Why?

You are not doing it wrong. That's just the disclaimer for the AUTOMATIC release.
Of all the things they could have made automatic...like leaving the transmission mode wherever you last left it...they chose this.

Or disabling auto start/stop permanent via user control... or the double honk... lol.

Just another day at the office for them.

You sure can use the electric parking brake in an emergency. See your manual.

Electric Parking Brake - Applying the Electric Parking Brake in an Emergency
APPLYING THE ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE IN AN EMERGENCY

You can use the electric parking brake to slow or stop your vehicle in an emergency.
Pull the switch up and hold it.
The red warning lamp illuminates, a tone sounds and the stoplamps turn on when you use the electric parking brake in an emergency.
The electric parking brake continues to slow your vehicle down unless you release the switch.
Note: Do not apply the electric parking brake when your vehicle is moving, except in an emergency. If you repeatedly use the electric parking brake to slow or stop your vehicle, you could cause damage to the brake system.

Must be a flatlander.

I live in a very hilly area and have a habit of setting the parking brake every time I park a car. Even in my garage which is level.

I stop the car.
Keep my foot on the brake.
Put the car in Neutral.
Apply the parking brake.
Release the brake pedal.
Put the car in park and get out.

This method prevents potential wear on the parking pawl when parked on an incline.

I may have to change the way I park when I get my Maverick.

More overthinking. Just keep your foot on the brake until the transmission is in gear and the parking brake is released. It takes like 4 whole seconds to start, select gear, and release parking brake manually.

I swear, the amount of handwringing on this board is astonishing.

ETA: Bob beat me to it.
The manual is by no means easy to understand. Although I have not diagrammed the procedures, (having experience in real time computer process programming) it appears to me that when the manual states to not manually release the parking brake, there is an undisclosed reason, elsewhere maybe on this site and possibly on another Ford centered site I read that when the selector is placed in park, (assumed manually or electronically) the parking brake is set and the parking pawl is engaged (you will then have parking brake (aka emergency brake?) set to "hold" and parking pawl (designed to hold the planetary gear set from turning which can hold the car in place even though not designed to be the sole "holder". I have not been able to locate where the parking brake pawl/dog is located. It can be many places and just has to hold the wheels preferably without loading the headset. In one of John Kelley's videos he said the was a one way clutch (on or near the damper at the engine) that he did not know why it might be there but he suspected it might prevent engine from being turned backwards. I doubt since this is preventing reverse rotation and not forward that it has anything to do with park brake. Anyway back to subject of not releasing parking brake manually. Consider the possibility of releasing the parking brake manually and then NOT moving the dial OUT OF DRIVE, changing your mind and getting out WITHOUT manually resetting the parking brake and then only the parking pawl will be set. Perhaps the manual should have stated "Do not manually turn off the parking brake without before or after selecting a drive mode.???". Maybe there is another or additional reason. The original post is right on "why am I confused". Those doing their brake setting and releasing can continue but may or may not inadvertently set up a bad condition.

All that means according to manual is when the parking brake is engaged, you need to start the truck, put it into gear and it automatically releases when you hit the gas.

One question I have not found the answer to. Concerning Hybrid only is the parking pawl which hold the ring gear in the planetary gear set the only parking pawl and is it sufficient? Someone has posted that his maverick got severely injured by a bump, I do not remember details but he was claiming trans damage, I believe. I'll look for it when I get a chance.

The discussion is about some who are in habit or otherwise desire to manually release it instead of having computer do it's thing! Some are also having difficulty in the parking brake requiring significant go pedal and having loud noise when the automatic release occurs.

Everything the manual says is proper.

I still do it the way OP does however my foot doesn't leave the brake until I open the door to get out.

The idea is that you are not relying on your automatic transmission to stop the weight of your vehicle. Let the parking brake do this before engaging park.

Likewise, if you disengage the P-brake before putting your vehicle in drive (or applying your foot to the brake) the vehicle's weight could roll forward or backward putting undue stress on the transmission.

Interesting. I haven't been using the parking brake unless on a hill.
The only think about not using a parking brake, and all cars do this, is as you lift your foot off the brake, the car rolls a bit, then the transmission stops it, and makes this metallic clicking sound. I'm super paranoid, so I've always wondered if that damages a transmission over time. Whereas with the parking brake engaged, a car doesn't roll at all once you take your foot off the brake.

That's pretty much the same way I've been using a parking brake for over 30 years now.

Hot Take; I've never used a parking brack on a non-standard transmission. It could be upside down and that brake isn't going to be stronger than a locked transmission.
