Has Tesla made more Teslas than Ford made Pintos?
Yes, Tesla has sold around 4.5 million and Ford recalled 1.5 million Pintos.
There would also be the question comparing miles driven.

And finally the 27 Pinto deaths were directly linked to the gas tank design problem. Whereas some of the people that died in Teslas may have died even if the vehicle had not caught on fire.

But it is still and interesting comparison.

Right, it a quality issue not a design issue. So there are a lot of variables.

Which machine did the bearing work on the engine?
What tooling was in the machine?
When was the machine last serviced?
Did the last mechanic working on the machine do the maintenace properly?
What operators was running the machine?
Did he operate it properly?
Who was doing the quality checks?
Were quality checks done properly?
Right, but one would think that Ford would have some factory floor analytics capabilities in place to answer the above questions. Most of the manufacturing I've been associated with in the past few decades have had strong analytics for forensic quality analysis. Every part/assembly can be traced to the equipment it was produced with (e.g. shift, operator(s), all sorts of temperature and dimensional data). This is pretty typical in modern factories.

OTOH, would you want them (dealerships) doing that much mucking around in there, on a perfectly running engine with just a few thousand miles on it, when they can’t even replace an airbag without causing damage?

Would you feel more confident in the new engine?
Sure. If they mess it up, they have to replace it. Free engine for life loop

Here it is...

https://www.tesla-fire.com/

Up to end of July, 2023, there had been 71 fatalities in Tesla car fire, since October 02, 2013; total number of Teslas sold 4.6M

The "official" fatalities related to the Pinto fires is 27, from 1971 to 1980; total number of Pintos sold 3.1M.

The number for Tesla is accurate, thank you digital world. The number for Pinto isn't prior to the digital world isn't. The estimated fatalities are at least 300 or way above that:

https://www.motherjones.com/wp-content/uploads/v2n8_sept1977-pinto.pdf

Accidents do happen and vehicles do catch on fire, be that Ford, GM, Chrysler, foreign made, etc. Some may have been due to design/manufacturing flaws, while other due to the force of the accident. The issue is the lack of timely recall and the manufactures fighting issuing one to protect their profit. Government agencies going along with the manufacturers is another issue, but beyond the scope of this forum.

The problem with the Maverick is that there's no accident, it can blow the engine and catch on fire on its own. Thankfully, there had been no personal injuries and I do hope that it'll stay this way. If Ford initially didn't want to spend $5 - 11 for the correcting the Pinto's design flaw, or recall, the chances of engine rebuild/replace of the Maverick at $3 - 4K is not likely. Let's hope Ford is right and there will be no fatalities, or injuries, with the impacted Mavericks... 🙏

LOL fire detector crossed my mind.

I wonder if very frequent oil changes (even if I do it at my expense) the first 10k miles is the solution. 500 miles,. 1500, 3000, 5000, 7500, 10k.... something like that.
Or is the bearing total garbage....filter should catch metal, so apparently oil changes won't help I fear....

Our truck was delivered just when the recall was sent to dealer,.so we can't have the truck, it's been sitting surely outside in the elements...was delivered late May or late June,.I forget....so how could engine be built before September??? If engine is newer, then why recall our truck???

Dealer has no clue, truck is sitting at the dealership still! If prices hadn't gone up so much for hybrid, we'd seriously consider ordering a 2024. Might order 2024 turbo .. and should also search dealers for a 2023. Seen a couple on Facebook for fair price.

Have you heard something?

The recall still shows no remedy, expected October 2023.
