imagine getting a new engine at 100k miles lol
Longer than most 3V Tritons make it.

This is nothing new to FORD. Sadly. They are experts at ignoring the issues and can afford the best legal representation which allows it to continue.

What does this mean for the consumer thinking about buying a hybrid Maverick still. Any indication this issue will be fixed in the '24 model year?

According to Ford, based on quality improvements at the engine plant, they believe all engines built after September 1, 2022, are not at elevated risk of engine failure/fire vs. any other engine. Thus no reason for concern on a 2024 Maverick (or any Maverick/Escape/Corsair/Kuga hybrid/PHEV not covered under recall 23S27 et al).

That said, you will have to take Ford's word for it.

Ah okay, thanks for the information! I'll probably still buy mine if/when it gets built, but I'll be watching this issue in the meantime.

After what they did so far with this issue, it's hard to do that. Downplaying the probability of the fire with serious injury works for a while, until the proverbial brown stuff hits the fan...

Well based on my reading of the article and taking a look at a few pages worth of the complaints on https://www.nhtsa.gov/ for these vehicles it does seem like all the ones catching fire were manufactured before September 1, 2022. I'm not saying I trust Ford, but I would imagine there was some incentive to fix it quickly and avoid too many fire hazards on the road so perhaps Ford is right? Maybe only time will tell.

This situation is very similar to the BMW N20 issue of a few years ago. The plastic timing chain guard could break and the pieces could cause a block breach and engine seizures. A new engine in the X1 was well over $10K, BMW extended the warranty from 4 years 50,000 miles to 8 years 100,000 miles. I do not remember if there were fires involved. The cost to replace the timing chain plastic retainer at the time was approximately $1,400 due mostly to labor at $125+ an hour.

In a rush to be the 'first on the block' they did not properly perform due diligence in design/test. No one can drive this truck any distance with their warning that it can catch fire. There should be loaners.

No, Ford has been using this engine design since 2005 in Escape hybrids and later in Fusion and CMax hybrids. It is well tested. It is not a design problem it is a manufacturing quality problem.

Article is paywalled so I don't know the details. But I highly doubt Ford knew about a potential engine fire problem and sat there with their thumb up their rumps. Ford knowing about the problem and continuing to allow those engines to be used would be damning. But suing for being slow to come up with a solution might not float in the courts.

Caveat: Not a lawyer.

Ford will probably have to do a random sample of effected trucks for inspection because they are only guessing at the number of effected trucks. Bring in 1-3000 trucks from different month engine production dates and tear into them to find the true number of potential failures. This won’t happen without guaranteed loaners for customers. If the number of potential failures is low then extend warranties and if its high then the shit will hit the fan. There will not be much customer cooperation based on the air bag, cable power and current non fix fire remedy results from dealers. No way will they ever replace 125,000 engines, I think the cost estimates previously given are really low and it assumes Ford dealers have the people to replace engines or do the repairs which they don’t. Just repairing the engines could take years for lack of parts and manpower.

Even if a person isn’t injured by an engine fire, the psychological effects can last quite a long time…

ha! Ask Kia how long you can get away with it. My Kia is currently at the dealership getting a brand new engine at 80,000 miles because Kia used defective engines for years. Based on the recalls coming out on the "new and improved" engines, they still have crap engines. The service guys at the dealership even admit that they have a huge line of cars waiting on engine warranty work because the engines are defective and yet - THE DEALERSHIP IS STILL SELLING THEM. Ford may just take the Kia path which is to settle the class action lawsuit agreeing to fix only the engines that actually breakdown and extending the warranty out (Kia went to 15 year/150,000).

FORD used the Tritons for years, and they are garbage. You even hear people referring to them as "bulletproof", and it's usually after they have repaired the entire top end cam phaser/timing issues - which will likely happen again anywhere from 30-60k after that initial repair. FORD Tech's literally made their popularity on repair channels via the Tritons, and now they are moving on to these setups. Most have even covered the PTU placement issues already lol. Sometimes it takes years for these issue to become "common" and consider a year model unreliable. In regards to the F150's, it was from 04-08 model before they finally moved on. And before those is was the 2V Tritons that had the same issues with crappier gearing and transmissions.
