Even with the fire damage, wouldn't his vehicle have been sharing info to Fordpass about any codes being thrown, etc? I'm curious what Ford will find out and if it will be shared. If there was a component failure or defect that caused the initial issue, I would venture to say it won't be.

yep - he might want to take a look at the engine before he contacts the insurance company and see if that cap is still on. But it is possible that if not that the cap flew off due to some internal engine pressure fault.....
What engine?

Add to this the comments about the funnel and it makes me wonder how many times it might have been used
One recent oil change and an easy mistake is all it would take.

Did you have the recall done where they drilled holes to make sure there is enough drainage in case of oil leaks? I think it was issue to address this issue.
That is only for the hybrid.

Sorry this happened, but I'm piggybacking on what others have stated, if there was oil dripping off the hood, that was your first sign of problems.
Oil dripping off the hood? Sounds like something was spraying oil everywhere under the hood. I would the mist like oil with a lot of 02 around it would be quite flammable. I don't know it about the mechanics under there but sounds like a valve cover gasket or line connection and failed and the oil was hitting the fan or drive belt. BTW my Captiva lost a lot of oil due to a leak, and some interstate driving no dash lights or check engine or anything, just the tranny started acting funny.

Sorry for your loss but...it blowed up real good.

Note to ecoboasters, I could have made a comment about how glad I am to have bought a hybrid...but I didn't 😛 EDIT: ...because it's IRRELEVANT, just like when ecoboasters do it when someone reports an issue with a hybrid.

If insurance lets you do a buyback, you might be able to sell it to a Gen-Z. They seem to have an infatuation with burning, and consider anything "lit" or "fire" to be good, no cap. 🔥

Kidding aside, I hope the buyout is actually replacement value, and not some blackbook nonsense, because picking up another Maverick at MSRP plus the taxes and what not you'd have to pay isn't going to be cheap right now.

Man that is sad and I want to have sympathy but writing - . "My family and I narrowly escaped the smoked filled cabin." No, the truth is the truck was driven until it caught on fire. There wasn't anything "narrow" about it. Smoke, idiot lights , oil on the hood - all these things scream call a tow truck. I'm really sorry it happened to you however driving a vehicle until something catastrophic happens ( eventually) isn't the total fault of the truck. Same thing I've told my teenagers when they don't put oil in their vehicle and eventually the motor blows up.
I would agree 100%. ANY vehicle could potentially catch fire under such circumstances. Saying it is somehow an issue specific to the Maverick, and they need to recall the trucks, is just plain wrong.

Wow, I am glad you guys are okay. Sorry for your loss. That was very scary. I agree a new truck should not catch on fire. My Maverick hybrid has been very reliable since the dealership removed the faulty fuse box. I am always a little bit worried about fire. I will remove the air trap cover underneath the engine on my next oil change. What do you guys think about that Idea? I have a hybrid gets 45 + mpg. Thanks

That didn’t matter any way. I had it planned to do the oil change on the 25th of May. I usually do it every 7500 miles even though Ford recommended every 10,000 miles.. The emissions had a problem at 1:47pm and a few seconds later the engine was misfiring , 15 mins later the firemen had put out the fire.
YOu kept driving the truck, stop changing the narrative.

To the people blaming him cause he didn’t address the oil dripping from the hood may I ask….why should a new truck have oil dripping from the goddamned hood? This is revolting and yet another reason I’m considering cancelling my order. Between this and the steering wheel landing in peoples laps from minor rear fender benders I’m starting to wonder if this is something I want my family in.
That is not the issue, when the OP opened the hood and SAW oiling dripping, a reasonable person would say, "This is not supposed to happen, there is a problem." You stop using the vehicle and call roadside assistance. OP decided to drive the truck "with all that oil on the hood and ADD more oil. So it's a user error...

Oil sprayed UP says a turbo was leaking and spraying the oil from too much crankcase pressure. Too much oil, wrong oil, restriction in oil journals....If I were to see smoke from under the hood I'd call triple A.
