Final update March 16 2023: hot the truck back, original flooded type battery swapped for a brand new AGM under warranty.

Update March 15 2023: see update in this post, dealership incompetent and barely did any troubleshooting before trying to give it back as working.

Update 2 March 15 2023: battery came out as perfectly fine after tests, still replaced under warranty. The truck will almost certainly fail again in the future, but service manager promises a rebtal truck and exhaustive electrical tests.

Greetings,

You might be confused by my title, but let me explain. Yesterday after taking 4 five-minute drives looking for some scarce medication, my truck refused to start again out of the blue. It had the usual symptoms of a dead battery: would only crank for 1/3 of a second, all lights would go out. This seems abnormal given my truck is about 1.5 years old, 29,500 km (18,330 miles) and seems too soon for the battery to die, but there's more to it.

When cranking the voltage would go down to 5.2 v, and then everything would turn off. Immediately after the battery read about 9v, then slowly creep back up to 12.5v like it is a brand new battery. It would still fail to crank, though.

I had a friend jump my truck, and strangely while jacked the maverick would crank like normal, and the engine seemed to fire up but then shutdown after barely half a second with no warnings on the dash.

It was 11:30 p.m., called Ford roadside assistance for a tow, and had to disconnect the battery to stop the parking brake from auto engaging after using the transmission park override. The guard at the dealership was apparently asleep or absent as no one came after an hour, so the truck overnighted at the tow depot.

Today at the dealership and after about 10 hours with the battery unplugged, the truck started right up twice, then on the third failed to crank again and jumping again did not help.

In summary, my truck is now at the dealership to check for a defective battery and/or some cryptic electrical gremlins.

I've read a few threads of ecoboosts with defective batteries, but never seen someone comment about jumpstarts failing nor the battery voltage bouncing back that much. Hopefully I'm not the unlucky discoverer of a new issue lol.

A fully charged battery is not +12.5v

It appears your battery is failing under load..

Failing at that mileage is not unusual and not unique to Ford...

What voltage is a car battery supposed to be at when the engine is off, then? Even the tech at the dealer said 12.6v means a full battery.

Also the battery failing under load, yeah, that seems pretty clear, but still doesn't explain why the engine doesn't stay on even when jump started. It might even mean the battery didn't die of internal failure, but of some external cause.

Sounds more like a poor battery connection. A few EcoBoosts have had loose battery terminals.
The terminals were really tight and impossible to move by hand, including the connection from battery ground to body, and for good measure I tightened them pretty hard at the dealership in front of the tech. Seems unlikely on mine at least unless the truck's harness is toast like on the early hybrids.

New fear unlocked 🫠

Btw I like the color on your mav, good choice :)

How were you reading the voltage as you were trying to start the truck? Is there a way for the instrument cluster to show voltage?

I tend to carry a multimeter and I happened to have a small bag of tools with me under the seat.

Thank you. I was so hopeful there was a way of displaying voltage on the instrument display.

While not ideal, you could always plug a USB charger that has a voltage display into the 12v outlet in the dash. They aren't always super accurate and would not work if there were wiring issues between the battery and the outlet. But they are extremely cheap.

IIRC there were some punk batteries last year that Ford replaced so I would not be surprised if you got one of those. Too bad the dealers won't check them so you don't get stranded.

I HATE THE DAMN IDIOTS AT THE DEALERSHIP

My truck has been in their shop all saturday, all monday, all of tuesday, and all they've done is try to jump start it, fail, have it sit overnight with the battery unplugged and then it started once. Their convo with me:

Tech "It started up and has been running today, would you like to take it home?"
Me "Did you remove the battery and load test it, or at least tried a new battery?"
Tech "...no"

FFS FREAKING AUTOZONE WOULD HAVE DONE A BETTER DIAGNOSIS IN 15 MINUTES, WHY THE HELL IS A DEALERSHIP SHOP SO INCOMPETENT, HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO TRUST THEY WON'T TOTAL MY TRUCK DOING THE SIMPLEST THINGS

In a twist of irony considering I've called them incompetent fools, at least they didn't completely waste time and did the airbag recall and the 30,000 km (20,000 mi) service.

I still don't know if only the battery is bad though, here's to hoping.
