Ah, yes.
The World of Tron.

Computers are a fad.

Gimme a 1952 Chevy with the Stovebolt and 3 on the tree.
My Peepaw fixed his with a crowbar oncet.

Some think we are in the world of Tron or something. Why is the assumption always we need "programming"?

Sometimes, actually often there is a physical flaw and you need a new or different part.

UPDATE: dealer finally replicated the noise and they have narrowed it down to the dampener. They ordered it today with no eta currently. Also they just had another hybrid maverick come in this week with the exact same issue.
I also confirmed that ford does not have an upgraded dampener and is replacing with the same part. Good chance I end up back for the same problem eventually.
There’s also a good chance that it’s just that *some* of those parts aren’t being manufactured to spec. That is to say it’s not a “wearing out” issue, but a “bad part to begin with” issue. So maybe it’s not an updated part that’s needed, it’s just that they need better quality control in making the part. That happens sometimes.

Anyway, hopefully this does fix it. As for the “invasiveness” of the procedure, I really really wouldn’t worry about that. Plenty of vehicles have problems like this that get addressed like this and are just fine for a really long time afterward. In short, they are made to be serviced and the techs generally have good procedures they follow and get it back as good or better than it left the factory.

Sounds like Ford with their issues with the Focus, Fiesta PowerShift Transmissions blowing up.
Hybrid sounds ideal in warm climates but who knows without a re-designed replacement part if issues will come up down the line.

I’m not trying to be negative so I was thinking the same. Maybe they had a bad “batch” of these parts. Im not fully confident but trying to remain positive. As far as being invasive I’m a little more relaxed with that because my dealers hybrid tech is also their transmission tech, so that’s nice. At the same time this is the final straw for my maverick. I need a reliable vehicle for my day to day life and so far this has not even been close. I do like the fuel economy but as of now that’s the only positive I have experienced.

I tend to agree. There are over 30,000 Mav Hybrids on the road. Some from as far back as Dec 2021. And I doubt the design is different from the eCVTs in the Escape Hybrids which has even more.

There’s was a pretty decent amount of escape hybrids that had this same issue from 2020-2022 models. You can Google “ford escape marbles in engine” to see some examples.

Keep us updated. I'm getting the same noise once in awhile, no engine light though. I just watch a video of a mechanic who is comparing old Dampers with new Dampers form a Prius. Make sense that's where the rattle is coming from.

I will. I don’t expect to have it back for a couple weeks unfortunately.

That's a great video that really explains a lot.

Also while the sound is annoying, it looks like you could live with it for a while, if you wanted to. I mean, replace it now or in 2 years probably won't harm other parts. Yes? Or no?

This explains a lot what I've observed in mine. I get a "rattle" when my engine shuts off (drops to EV mode). The rattle is worse if I am asking for a little battery powered acceleration (asking for positive torque) when engine stops than if I am just coasting with regen (negative torque).

I am not too sure it’s harmless. The shaking it cause definitely was able to cause a misfire which alone is bad for the engine. My fear is it will cause it to operate out of time which could destroy the engine. Not saying it will but I don’t want to take that chance.

Hi John. Can you send us a DM with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into this for you.

UPDATE: Another week passed and no progress. Still waiting on parts supposedly. Not expecting to see it for 2-3 more weeks. It’s been 3 weeks total so far. It’s safe to say my first experience with ford is not going too well.

I'm sure the dampers is the noise we hear, but what is causing the misfire and shake?

In TSB 22-2493 for the P0402 code and/or Brake-Grab, they mention to update software and replace the EGR sensor (only if code P0402 is present). I'm no mechanic, but what does the EGR sensor have to do with hybrid brakes? Was this supposed to be 2 different TSBs?

If you google search P0402 it does mention "misfire". A bad EGR valve can cause a misfire. I did get the Brake-Grab update done, and satisfied with results, but the EGR sensor was never touch as I didnt have the code. I'm also having the same rough idle at times and now I did get the misfire on my Ford Pass app. I'll mention this to my dealer, I have an appointment next week.

If the damper is bad it will also cause everything to be out of balance causing a shake under load and I’m assuming that would cause it to misfire. Who knows though, it’s one thing after the other with this thing. If this fixes my current issue I’m sure something else will pop up soon.
I had the TSB for the “rough idle” glowing cat and sulfur smell….twice. I also had the brake TSB done. They are doing my airbag recall while it’s in for the damper.
It’s been 3 weeks and all they’ve done is diagnose it. Haven’t started a thing yet. I’m guessing another month before I get it and by that time the cold weather will be gone and I won’t even be able to know if it’s fixed yet.
