I just payed for the tab renewal for my Mav. The price for renewal was pretty significant. There are some interesting fees included in this price.

Can somebody explain me what's the transportation electrification fee and why owner of the hybrid vehicle has to pay for the electrification.
Gross weight fee is kind of interesting as well. Is this small truck that heavy?

Hybrids are more efficient, thus they use less gas.

Government gets funding from gas taxes, which are generally assessed per gallon purchased. Your hybrid uses less gas, you pay less gas tax, your state wants to make up the difference.

Not sure on the gross weight charge. Looks like that's for vehicles 16,000+ lb. Might want to reach out to them to ensure that's the correct fee, or someone else in WA could chime in.

6,000 pounds$ 45.00

" To realize the environmental benefits of electrification of the transportation system it is necessary to support the adoption of electric vehicles and other electric technology in the state by incentivizing the purchase of these vehicles, building out the charging infrastructure, developing greener transit options, and supporting clean alternative fuel infrastructure. Therefore, it is the intent of the legislature to support these activities through the imposition of new transportation electrification fees in this section. "

I love it. "We intend to support the purchase of electrified vehicles by making it more expensive to do so." Could there be a more "government" statement?

Why should hybrid and EV owners not pay for road maintenance like the rest of us?

They should. I am just laughing at they way it's worded. It's like if they wanted to encourage motherhood, then passed a $500 per birth tax.

My state (blue state CT) actually charges a LOWER registration fee to EVs, and the same registration for hybrids as for regular ICE vehicles. CT gets you in other ways: high electricity rates, and annual property tax on vehicles. My Maverick will probably cost me about $850 in property tax next summer. And another $850 or so for my Bolt EV

Alabama charges a hybrid fee, but only on PHEVs (and the EV fee). Same principle as others have stated: your use of electricity lowers the amount of gas taxes collected and gas taxes are almost exclusively used to maintain the roads. Short of taxing you by the mile, this is the best way to recoup those taxes.

The bulk of our fees are ad valorum taxes based on what the vehicle is worth. So, it goes down every year.

Thank God for Texas. Love the fact my Kia Hybrid does not cause a fee to be charged. When my Maverick Hybrid comes in, it will be the same. The thought of this drives me crazy. I guess we should say welcome to the new world we live in.

They do word it a bit weird. Their intent is more like "encourage motherhood by charging new mothers $500 to fund free new mother-kits and expanded postnatal care for future mothers".

Charge you now for the benefit of future people in your same demographic. Charge you a tax now to fund more chargers and infrastructure for full EV vehicles down the road. Doesn't help the Hybrid Mav since it is not plug-in.....

The Seattle area way, tax, tax, and more tax. I have to pay an extra $40 like you for local road up keep, but that $233 RTA tax is terrible. It was voted in my all the Seattle area do gooders, so you guys have no one to blame but yourselves.

Just guessing but I expect possibly all vehicles pay this fee or if it's a fee assessed to help improve the electrification "movement" and is assessed only on electric vehicles then your hybrid could be claimed exempt from it because it's bottom line a gas powered vehicle. One would have to read the passed legislation to verify liability in your case. In some states vehicles are classified by private or commercial and a hatchback used as a commercial has to have commercial plates. Compare all the fees on the maverick to those of a private passenger vehicle (what did you drive before?) To see if anything else has appeared or increased.

Is this a one time expense or yearly? Not clear to me.

Don't know when it's coming but annual vehicle inspections require the mileage in TEXAS so the gasoline tax will not be replaced due to federal $$ is tied to it. There will be a milage tax soon possibly with different rates for gas/phev/& electric vehicles (would it be called "kw tax"?) in Texas. Remember from day ONE in the USA every following day is a new day to live in. While in Jr high we got a tv and I had to learn how to test it's tubes at the drug store. Wonderful pager came out in high school which freed me up from staying home waiting for my "come to work" on call job. My first 8-5 job (age 12) which I was grateful to have paid $12.50/week plus lunch. It was not a slave job as I had personal time and did not have to go to day care and my friends who stayed home only had $2-$5 weekly allowance. Fast forward to today. Gas is apparently on way out sooner than we would like or is it that in the current "civilization" we have lost the knowledge of the propulsion system of the flying carpet. There are uncountable electrons everywhere and we need them where we want them. Someone will turn that spigot on soon, I think!
