These are my findings today, your mileage may vary...

Some factual 'cost-savings' numbers comparing K&N air filters with Motorcraft. I used the Ecoboot as K&N doesn't list an air filter on their site for the Hybrid, however I would expect them to be similar.

K&N #33-3131 List $64.99 sale price $51.99
K&N Service kit (cleaner and oil) List $23.95 sale price $18.03
Total sale price for K&N $70.02

Motorcraft FA1939 List $23.95, common sale price $15.34

Ford recommends air filter replacement every 30k miles.

Financial break-even point is 136,936 miles. (($70.02/$15.34)30,000)

I purchased K&N air filters 22 years ago and run them in 2 of my fun cars for specific reasons. Given that, I don't run them in any of my other fun cars or daily drivers and likely will never run oiled filters again. K&N is not proven to out perform other high-quality filters, and I end up cleaning mine frequently anyway dispite the 50k recommendation. I'm not a fan of extended service intervals in anything. One example (for me) is spark plugs with a recommended replacement of 100,000 miles. That means that I would be running half-worn plugs for 50,000 miles, and 3/4 worn plugs for 25,000 miles.. No thanks...

Many quality air filters are rated at ~20 microns, K&N rates their filters based on inches of water of restriction when filtering combined test media from 10-180 microns. A marketing breakthrough....

been there - done this.
K&N is not proven to out perform other high-quality filters
K&N is a hype - no data behind the product. it should be used as pre-filter or a strainer. :D

Bottom Line:

Two Styes.
Both adequate.
Choose what you like.

If K&N were as bad as some think, they'd be out of business.

If K&N were as great as some think, everyone would be using them.

Since neither is happening, that MEANS, as a FACT they are "adequate".

Paper = better filtration, worse air flow.
Adequate filtration. Adequate air flow.

K&N = better air flow, worse filtration.
Adequate filtration. Adequate air flow.

FACT
Neither will kill your engine.
Neither will make your engine last longer.

FACT
If you disagree with this, there is no way to reason with you because you are unable or unwilling to reason.

The only thing you will gain from a K&N air filter is the ability to clean and reuse.
you'll gain less performance if you don't oil it perfectly which 99% of users don't. Too little oil and you're letting dirt get in the intake. Too much and you're restricting airflow as well as most likely causing oil build up on your MAP sensor which is what measures boost. It's precision calibrated so the tiniest amount of oil on it can cause incorrect boost readings which is a terrible thing when your ECU is using those readings to map out fuel trim. I honestly don't know why people use these things anymore. If you really want a reusable washable filter I suggest you reach out to AEM and request them to bring one of their dry filters to market for the maverick since they don't rely on oil.

Using the time value of money, this is a losing proposition, the savings are probably negative.

You are so wrong about K&N. but i like that you change your narrative. it means you learn.
K&N will be in business because they make good filters for racing / performance especially for older cars. Adequate filtration  this is a joke. it is four times below OEM Specifications, no wait, K&N doesn't have any specifications.
you got this right:
Paper = better filtration, worse air flow.
Adequate filtration. Adequate air flow.

K&N = better air flow, worse filtration.
Adequate filtration. Adequate air flow.

WRONG 👎 this is your opinion not a fact.
Neither will kill your engine. yes it will wear engine sooner.
Neither will make your engine last longer. yes it will last longer if you have OEM of better micron rating filter vs K&N
WRONG 👎 this is your opinion not a fact.
If you disagree with this, there is no way to reason with you because you are unable or unwilling to reason. data is the proof. the rest is your humble opinion
@GPSMan please don't say that something is a fact if this is just your opinion without any data to prove it.

Disagree with this. K&N is in business mostly because they have a diverse product line and 99% of their clientele have no clue how bad their air filters are. Ask most auto techs and they'll tell you what utter garbage their air filters are. Most consumers are clueless and will believe anything written on the box.

“Marketing Breakthrough” primarily Directed at one group of consumers some of whom are in this thread. LOL

But it's a truck.
It will always be a truck.
It will only be a truck.
No matter how much you love it, it won't last forever.

It's also not a medical grade device.
It's overkill what many propose.
It does not NEED sterile sub micron level filtration. It just doesn't.

I don't condemn people for using paper or whatever.

I don't even consider all filters equal.
They are not.

Let me say that again:

ALL FILTERS ARE NOT EQUAL.

With millions sold, K&N are adequate.
That's it.
But I get what you are saying and I agree there can be greater chance of fuck ups with them, so maybe the amateur motorist should stick to OEM.

I think you'd have a really hard case convincing anyone I'm being in any way unreasonable here.

I wasn’t saying to use one. You’d have to be some kind of really special(which I’m sure there is) to mess it up. I’ve used them for some industrial situations and never had an issue by following their steps.
My maverick will not get one.

Performance: If you happen to drive down dirt roads or in dusty conditions, a K&N will allow harmful particles to pass by. These will eventually harm cylinder walls and piston rings, fact, not fiction.
Cost: I changed the air filter on my 2014 C-Max at 97,000 miles, 1st time.
Absolutely zero change in fuel economy and no noticeable gain in performance. How would I be saving $$$ with a K&N? I plan on driving this car until I retire. By then it will have close to 180,000 miles, with the same filter I just installed, $20.00 ?
If a K&N flows more air, which it probably does, it does so for what reason?
Ford's OEM filter will flow all and more air than a Hybrid Maverick needs.
If you are building a hot rod, by all means, go with a K&N, that was their original market.

There is actually very nice test were done by project farm with k&n filter. results are as expected. it is not scientific ISO test but Project farm is using nice setup Dylos Laser Particle Counter - Laser based air quality monitor that shows 5 microns or larger particles in air filtration. I have this air quality monitor for many years. very precise. here is project farm video
