You can improve airflow even more if you just remove the filter altogether. That isn't the purpose of the filter. The purpose is to filter out particulate such as silica that scratches the heck out of your cylinders.

What little hp gain you'd get (1/2?) is greatly outweighed by the terrible filtering of the media itself and ensuing loss of compression.
Maybe go look at my oil analysis for this terrible filter and silicate.
Or lack of. All of mine have come back with basically the same amount of it than any other posted here. I run in dry dusty conditions more than most.
But by all means keep repeating the same stuff you hear others say.
Please list one person or example of a kn style filter that actually cause an engine to fail. They pass the sae standards for filtration. Which mean that anything that may get past them more than likely won’t cause any wear.
Not saying anyone should run out and buy the be but they certainly won’t hurt. The rest of the vehicle fails long before the engine is wore out from a kn filter.

I do it for convenience sake.

One and done. Nothing more to buy. Ever. Until I get another vehicle.

People who like those vacuum chamber filtering tests are missing the point. Just like 99% of people mis-understood the purpose of masks during covid.

Both points, both cases, the point is not to stop atom sized (or virus sized) particles. The point is to stop relatively speaking large particles, and in the case of viruses, those paper masks do not stop viruses. They stop coughs and sneezes and spit and water droplets that carry them.

Your engine does NOT need "sterile" air.
But some people think it does.

I was unable to find one via the normal places. Found it on the K&N website, free shipping and with tax was $54.59

K&N makes a good product that can be beneficial in SOME applications. However, about the only benefit on a daily driver is in cost and that takes many thousands of miles to recoup. It can have some negative consequences, especially if you encounter dusty conditions.

Funny you say you run in dry and dusty conditions often because that is the environment that defeats the one advantage to K&N air filters on a daily driver: costs. I only get 2 cleanings and oilings out of the recharge kit. I love K&N filters and run them on my Austin Healey but the engine is lightly ported and I run a header and free flow exhaust and the car is a fair-weather driver. They are good filters in certain applications.

I've put many miles on K&N filters and they've always worked well for me. For those that are concerned about dust and frequent cleanings, I would suggest you look into Outerwears pre-cleaners for cone-style filters. They shed water and dust very well, and will greatly reduce cleaning & oiling maintenance.

With that said, if you're going to use the stock intake, my suggestion would be to keep using paper filters. K&N replacement panel filters really don't provide much benefit in my experience.

I recall seeing a video a few years back that showed K&N air filters provided a negligable increase in horsepower but ONLY at high RPM's.

I don't recall how they judged filtration. I do believe that if such a filter provided real benefits it would be used as OEM by multiple auto makers.

For a brief moment I considered installing one [on a different vehicle]. After considering the time and effort to clean and maintain it, I decided to stick with OEM filters that I purchased either at Walmart or on the Internet.

My point wasn’t that it’s better for that. It’s the fact I like them can service them and they seem to do the job just fine. Contrary to what some say.
Nothing more or less. When I’m done playing in the sand and dust I pop it out clean and toss it back in. Usually the next oil change.

So you're saying if I wear a mask and someone with covid coughs spittle that lands on the mask I wont get covid or are you saying if I have covid and cough in my mask I wont spread it? Neither makes sense to me and to date the only research I've seen that gives any positives to preventing disease is an English study that gave a very minor degree of effectiveness and attributed it to other people avoiding people wearing masks. And you might want to reconsider comparing a virus to an atom size wise because a small virus has at least 600 million atoms (600,000,000 :1). One more thing doc, what is sterile air?

Okay, you caught me missing another positive: they can also be handy as well as cost effective. Swapping one positive for another is fine.

Learn to comprehend what you read.
You mistakenly equated atoms to viruses, when I did not.
Okay, what does light have to do with the subject, the size of a photon? I suspect you have a lot on your mind, so I'll just leave it alone.

I should say that mine is tuned for e30 so the kn filter does make more sense for me. I don’t have a before and after dyno but they have seemed to give gains in other platforms once pushed a bit. The focus st and rs show very good gains with just the kn Style filters installed after a tune.

I should have looked at your other vehicles in profile, not your typical daily drivers. By way of my off-road background, we frown on K&N (although the BMW doesn't get more than dirt roads). But like I said, the A-H loves them
