These are my findings today, your mileage may vary...
Some factual 'cost-savings' numbers comparing K&N air filters with Motorcraft. I used the Ecoboot as K&N doesn't list an air filter on their site for the Hybrid, however I would expect them to be similar.
K&N #33-3131 List $64.99 sale price $51.99
K&N Service kit (cleaner and oil) List $23.95 sale price $18.03
Total sale price for K&N $70.02
Motorcraft FA1939 List $23.95, common sale price $15.34
Ford recommends air filter replacement every 30k miles.
Financial break-even point is 136,936 miles. (($70.02/$15.34)30,000)
I purchased K&N air filters 22 years ago and run them in 2 of my fun cars for specific reasons. Given that, I don't run them in any of my other fun cars or daily drivers and likely will never run oiled filters again. K&N is not proven to out perform other high-quality filters, and I end up cleaning mine frequently anyway dispite the 50k recommendation. I'm not a fan of extended service intervals in anything. One example (for me) is spark plugs with a recommended replacement of 100,000 miles. That means that I would be running half-worn plugs for 50,000 miles, and 3/4 worn plugs for 25,000 miles.. No thanks...
Many quality air filters are rated at ~20 microns, K&N rates their filters based on inches of water of restriction when filtering combined test media from 10-180 microns. A marketing breakthrough....
