I'm thinking Kia could give it a good shot, but for me that Hyundai bed would need to grow!
I've been wondering about KIA and if they were going to do a version of the Santa Cruz. For me, KIA is almost like the old Mercury cars in the regard as they were always a bit more expensive but offered more standard features than their Ford counterpart. Maybe KIA will offer a more off road capable vehicle while Hyundai offers a more on road AWD vehicle. Who knows, just fun speculating.

I agree! The Kia Borrego wasn't here long, but it was a real truck - SUV. Kia definitely seems more industrial or masculine than Hyundai.

The main problem for competitors is that they always price their Hybrids higher than their ICE only vehicles usually by a few thousand or more depending on the vehicle.

This is known as the EV or Hybrid upcharge as those competitors believe that the higher cost to the customer is worth it to the buyer's.

Ford on the Maverick was the first to offer the Hybrid for less than the EcoBoost ICE engine version. For MY22 the Hybrid was $1085 cheaper than the FWD EcoBoost. For MY23 it is still cheaper by about $350.

I do not believe that competition will exist for a very long time on MPG alone much less on price.

I think a RAV4 Hybrid based pickup would be the top competitor. Tacoma dominates mid sized trucks and the RAV4 is the top selling SUV. Ford would have the edge on price (Mexico vs Kentucky) unless Toyota could move it to Mexico. Its always best being the first out of the blocks but Toyota has a better quality reputation.
New Tacoma coming for 2024 so the earliest would be 2025 for a RAV4 based model.

I'll buy that! Even with a premium because of the resale value of the Toyo.
But I think Toyota will never compete against Maverick based on utility because they would be competing against their own Tacoma then!
I'd sure love to see the Toyota hybrid mini-Taco! The Toyota Rav4 Hybrid AWD system appears to be the class of the field to me.
Currently, the Rav4 Hybrid is the only competitor I see for the Maverick hybrid, even though it doesn't have a box.

The obvious competitor would be if Hyundai throws a hybrid drivetrain in the Santa Cruz.
Even if they do, it will just lead to an even greater price gap between the two trucks. Unless they can do what ford did and make the hybrid standard, which seems unlikely, I don't see a Sante Cruz hybrid really touching the maverick hybrid. As it's all about the ands, you get a hybrid, and it's super affordable.

The question is how much do they want to engineer to beat it vs their EV spending goals?

Ford has been acknowledged for the durability and efficiency of it's hybrid powered cars! Now it appears that the Maverick hybrid will continue that trend.
Can any other manufacturer top the Maverick for fuel mileage, load capacity, towing capacity, interior space, and price? Will any other OEM even bother to try?
I think Ford landed a "Moon Shot" with the Maverick and it will take more than several years for it to be equaled!
Love my Maverick Hybrid but if Toyota drops a similar product (size, price, etc) 👋🏻

If I had a Yugo, I might consider trading it for a Hyundai or Kia.
As it is, I will be trading a RAV4 for a Maverick (unless I die waiting), which I will drive until Toyota comes out with a shrunken Taco. Santa Cruz? No. I would rather walk. Which would be a definite possibility with the Korean Kiddie Kar.

Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Ford all have small SUV hybrids.

And how many of them get 37MPG combined and cost under $25K?
None of them...just like the Rav4 hybrid (totally stripped base model starts at $29k). They all start in the $30k range (the Kia is the cheapest, it also gets the best mileage). Pretty odd isolating the Rav4 hybrid as the only Maverick competitor, when it doesn't meet your criteria either - in fact, the kia and hyundai would be closer.

There really isn't a Maverick competitor.
