Hybrid or EB for freeway commute?

She drives about 70 miles round trip to work each day. These miles are about 95% freeway (70 MPH speed limit). .

With a commute like that I would really want adaptive cruise control and to get that in the Maverick you have to get the Lariat Luxury package unless they add that for other trim levels for 2023.

That puts the price in the low $30s before tax and licence even without AWD. With AWD that would be in the mid 30s before tax and licence.

The Lariat Luxury package has been causing all sort of delays because of the supply chain constraints. Realistically if she ordered one then she would be doing good to get it by next summer which might be long after her car lease ends.

Don't get me wrong I think that the Maverick is a great truck but it might not be right for her. There are a lot of other vehicles which might be a better commuter car.

For the same price you could get something like a Subaru Outback(or Legacy, Crosstrek, etc) and have by this fall before the snow starts.

She could also just buy the Edge at the end of the lease.

Hybrid. You'll still get better MPG than the eco (this will pretty much always be the case regardless of the type or trip or driving conditions), and it's cheaper to begin with

That would be awesome to get that kind of mileage out of the hybrid. I'm a little concerned about all the issues people seem to get having with the hybrid but hopefully they are easily fixed and get all sorted out.

In my area the speed limits are 55 mph. If I drive the speed limit and keep a light foot on the gas and brake I will average 46 MPG even when driving 70% highway miles.

55 is the sweet spot for highway driving. My drive is half posted 75 so actual speeds are 85 sometimes 90. The remainder is 70-80, no cops since Covid. My C-Max takes a hit but honestly so does my F150 and my wife’s 2.0 Escape. Hybrid mileage is more influenced by the driver than other vehicles by a long shot. Of course, boosted, intercooled and awd is kinda sexy

I commute 130 miles round trip daily, with all but 10 miles each way on the parkway. I typically stay at or around 65 mph. At close to 6000 miles, I'm averaging close to 44 mpg even using the A/C. On the few nightmarish Friday Brooklyn to Jersey Shore rides home that become stop and go, there is consolation in the fact that I see 50 mpg at the end of the trip. No experience in the snow yet...

My wife is thinking of going with a Maverick for her next vehicle. She drives about 70 miles round trip to work each day. These miles are about 95% freeway (70 MPH speed limit). She is currently leasing her 2nd Edge AWD but we will most likely buy the Maverick.

I'm curious if anyone here drives the kind of mileage she does on the freeway with either the Hybrid or the EB? She does like the AWD on her Edge as we are in Michigan and do get snow, etc. Just wondering what kind of mileage difference we might see between the Hybrid and the EB for mostly freeway driving? Also wondering how well the Hybrid does in the snow, etc being that it's only FWD.

I drove from Florida to Virginia and back and averaged over 38 mpg going 78 mph. On the way up during the daytime, when I hit slower traffic, the mileage was even better and the battery will power the truck up to about 65 mph or so (like if going downhill or seeing a slowdown ahead and backing off). I get up to 44mpg driving around town here in FL.

Re: snow, I grew up in Pittsburgh, and I would say that if you know how to drive, FWD with good tires in snow should be fine. If you don't know how to drive in snow, then you can still screw up even with AWD. Given you live up there, you and your wife probably have plenty of snow driving experience, and I would bet that the FWD with snow tires would be all you need to get around safely. BTW, I love the truck and it was super comfortable on that long trip.... we drove all the way home 14 hours straight and it was not a chore. Ford did a great job on the Mav!

What Problems?
I turn the key and it runs.. And it runs very well.
Sure little things here and there but it's first model year. Low Volt battery issue was a loose harness.. not the motor. Fire recall was 23 total 2.5L engines that failed on the Escape hybrid due to a manufacturing defect on the crankshaft. Same engine but not even the Maverick - thus the recall to protect against fire. Occasional engine shake - seems like a software issue... Hood flutter - not the engine. Honestly there have been no significant issues with the Maverick hybrid. I think the engine shake is the most annoying but they will fix that soon. It has happened 2x in the past 3k miles

We had one of the problems recently that has been discussed, namely the hybrid being completely dead when we went to use it. Educated myself here and on the web about the wiring harnesses, etc and got it going myself. Dealership couldn't find anything when testing so it may have been as simple as needing to reseat the battery terminal cables, which I had done. And I put a portable battery charger in the Maverick just to be on the safe side. Other than that we absolutely love the truck, just as much as our F-150. Sh-t happens with any first model year vehicle, so I'm not concerned.

+1 for this. Unless you're looking for a small pickup for other needs as well, it is good to shop around for other vehicles. The Rav4 hybrid comes with standard AWD, with basically the same MPG and with Adaptive cruise control for ~the same amount as a similarly (minus AWD) hybrid Maverick. Additionally the Corolla Cross is rumored to be getting Hybridized with basically the RAV4 system for 2023, and it will likely come in less than a similarly equipped Maverick.

I’ve put 8,000 plus miles on my Hybrid, at least 5,000 of those highway, mostly fully loaded and running AC. I’ve never gotten less than 36 (that was uphill and into a huge headwind). I usually drive 4 mph over the speed limit. I average 38-40 on highway and 45-52 mpg around town. Haven’t seen winter yet, but Also in SE Michigan so I hope it’s good in the snow.

Nice to hear from a fellow SE Michigander (LOL). Can't argue with the mpg's your seeing. Have you had any issues with your Maverick at all?

Not sure how any of this will work out for us as my wife's lease is up on her Edge in June and I would doubt we will see a 2023 Mav show up by then after we order. Maybe she'll have to extend her lease a bit. I guess the good news is we'll get to see from your (and others) how the Hybrid does in the snow

just traded my maverick hybrid in. it wasnt what it was all hyped up to be. got very boring to drive and problems were starting.
