So I bought my Maverick expecting gas milage near the window sticker. I was quickly disappointed as I was not getting near posted highway milage. I’m known for being able to get good gas milage with my vehicles either through utilizing cruise control or not. It’s kinda a challenge for me. I often take long highway trips.

It was only after reaching 4K miles did I notice a change in my milage on the highway! I’m surprising and happy to show you the onboard estimator and I have to say if it’s off it’s pretty damn close! Still in disbelief. This trip was from the mountains of WV to Florida and not stopping for gas or anything till SC & GA state line, exit 1 off I95 in SC. as you can see in the pics I averaged between 37 and 38 mpg in my XL trim with the 2.0 ecoboost AWD! IF I’m not mistaken this is what the hybrid is posted as getting.

Since this trip I have not been on another long highway trip but I consistently get 31 mpg and on up on shorter trips.

I'm impressed alone with the 31 MPG number for a 2.0.

Were you driving downhill the entire time with you got the 38-39 numbers?;)

No was not downhill the whole time. Once I refilled In SC I got 37 mpg from there to center if FL. I will say traffic was good with no delays or stoppage.

Did you say "Hi" to Pedro (at South of the Border) when you crossed from NC to SC?

"You're always a weiner at Pedro's."

I had a 2000 ford focus that I bought brand new and it did the same thing. I was told it was the engine parts wearing in together. My mileage started out at 19 and ended up getting around 34 mpg after break in.

When gauging MPG on a long trip I take the average of the trip down and trip back because of elevation changes and/or having a tailwind v. headwind.

For instance in the spring/summer/fall when traveling south from Ohio to our property in Western NC I will see MPG 3-4 less on the way down because I'm driving from 850 feet to 4700 feet and hitting a SW/S headwind than what I see on the way back.

Any chance your area switched to summer gas blends? Or did you switch from an ethanol blend to a non-ethanol blend in your travels
Good question! I don’t know if the two gas stations hundred of miles apart switched or not but one thing I did forget to mention was I used mid grade gas (89 octane) instead of the 87.

Is that your calculation or the trucks? I have noticed the truck to be 2 more MPG then when I calculate it myself.

Significant downhill does affect mileage a surprising amount. Driving down from the mts in PA to the Philly area I would regularly break 38-40mpg avg for the trip in a Kia Soul (rated 28mpg iirc, and I avged about 33 in normal driving).

That's great mileage. I've just a little over 2000 miles on my 6 month old XL and I typically get 30-31 mpg on highway trips and right now I'm averaging 25.5 mpg on all the miles I've driven. Both are certainly acceptable, but I would love to get the type of mileage you are.

I am doing mostly city driving and at 850 or so miles averaging 27MPG. I am certainly happy with that but to be in the 30's, yeah I would take that!

By law, gas stations need to switch to summer blend by May 1st. I just got some gas a week ago. I did not drive the last 2 weeks of April and 1st week of May. I was getting 19.5 mpg on March-April gas. Since I filled with gas a week ago, I am now getting close to 24 mpg. No change in driving habits and routes taken. Thank you summer blend!!
