I don't care how cheap you make the rest of the vehicle. You can't stuff 100KWh worth of batteries in there and hit the $30K price point. It would also weigh 5000lbs and effectively reduce the payload to zero if built on the same chassis. What's even the point of having the bed?

I get BEV skeptics, I really do. BEVs are not very appealing purchase for a whole lot of use cases (bitter cold climates, super long commutes, long distance towing, city dwellers without a garage to charge in) in 2022. Right now they're mostly an expensive tribal symbol you get to drive around.

But what's true today won't be true in just a very few years. The engineering and cost challenges are all being met with great rapidity. I predict all the people who are slamming BEVs in 2022 as "ain't never gonna happen" will be nowhere to be seen in 2027. They'll all pretend they knew BEVs were gonna be awesome all along. Like we all do when we're proven wrong by the passage of time. It's human. It's cool.

Fair disclosure. I test drove a Tesla 3 years ago and hated it. I thought it was a human factors disaster and still do. But I'm a full-fledged BEV fanboy and can't wait for my BEV Hobbit truck to arrive on the market.

They’re expensive because they’re being sold at the high end of the market. They’ll be moving down market sooner than you think.

I'm not sure if you are saying that EVs are only high-end cars (have you driven a base leaf or Kona EV - both every bit as "budget" as a Maverick XL - or even a base Tesla Model 3?) or that EVs have only been sold during a period when inflation and supply chain issues has made cost go up? Either way, it doesn't make any sense.

The problem with EVs is that, even with improvements in tech, they are still really far from being comparable in cost (to produce) as an ICE vehicle. That's a serious concern now and for the foreseeable future. Best of luck holding your breath for a ~$30k EV truck I guess.

The F150 Lightning with 300-mile range costs $50K and you can only get that through a fleet order. Otherwise it's over $70K.

Not sure where you're getting this information. The price of lithium has more than quadrupled in the last year alone. The cost of electricity is also rising.

Do you really think a 300-mile EV pickup truck could be had for less than every new Tacoma and Ranger sitting on dealer lots right now? Unlikely. Even $40K seems pretty cheap, $30K is impossible.

We are still very early in the development of mass manufacturing auto batteries. EVs will likely be cheaper than ICE vehicles and when this happens, it may be hard to purchase a new car with an engine in it... or worse yet find a place to fuel the thing up.

If The Government wants us to get hybrids or electric vehicles, then auto manufacturers need to make them affordable.

Huh? Yes, battery efficiency has increased and price has come down (WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT I SAID), but the price of EVs overall has not (there are several factors). Would you like to look at the price of a base Tesla model 3 5yrs ago and compare it to today? Point me to a single example of an EV going down in price in the last few years (I would love to be wrong).

Well, the Chief Technology Officers of both Mercedes and Aston Martin both came out recently and said this (cost of EV production dropping to be even comparable to ICE) is not happening anytime soon. I tend to respect the opinion of the leading experts in the field, especially when they are saying something that none of us want to hear. I hope they (and I) are wrong.

Well, the base model Maverick price is pretty unbelievable, so future models could also be unbelievably priced, if Ford commits to taking market share, especially in pickups.

Some of you are trying to make more of this than there is. It was just a wild-ass guess, as noted in my first comment (WAG). I’m not saying it will happen, just that it could. I’m open to possibilitit’s, not closing them off. I’m trying to lean optimistic.
