I am curious, personally we ordered out of state, but I shopped locally first. In our case once doc fees, CD fees Etc were taken into account we saved close to 12% off of local pricing.

Just how much of a premium is shopping locally to you?

You can choose 2 options.

I'm paying maybe 5% more, if that. But I'm also going to have a trade in and will save against sales tax, so in that respect it's a wash. And knowing that taxes will actually be used locally is good as well. Then considering transport or driving, I'd actually be in the hole.

12%? Wow, would you break that down into numbers? I got a loaded lariat hybrid, and even with the 4% under invoice discount it only worked out to about $1,500. Which is nothing to sneeze at. But once I work in all the associated other costs it was a push.
So what is the best price you were offered locally versus what you ended up paying out of state?

All other things equal, I will go local, but living in a small country town, there is often a significant markup on most things, especially if you can't get it at Wally World. As for the Maverick, the local Ford dealer was not even attempting to add any dealer markup, so no need to go to the big city.

Taxes will be local anyway. At least every state I know of is going to get their share. In Georgia we have some weird laws regarding vehicle taxes and what you pay in taxes has little correlation to what you paid for the vehicle. Instead the taxes are based on what the State thinks your vehicle is worth. Apparently this went into effect in 2013

As far as I know, I will not be charged a premium. I paid a $500 deposit when I placed my order. I was told the deposit is refundable and/or transferable, because my dealer is confident they can sell my hybrid if I decline to buy.

I will pay full price (MSRP-available discounts/incentives), but no additional charges that I know of. There is always the possibility they could attempt to ~bleep~ me over when/if my hybrid arrives, so we shall see.

I purchased from Dick Masheter Ford in Columbus, OH.

For me, its all about the final price. Can someone out of town/state save me enough to make it worth my while to take the time off and go to them when I can get X-plan locally? For me, that's another $500 off that price at a minimum.

In Ohio, you have to add sales tax on non-Ohio internet purchases when you file taxes each year.

On taxes, in Illinois it is a flat 7.25% regardless of where you bought the vehicle. I know Missouri (I'm on the state line) just fills out the proper forms to waive Missouri taxes and computes the 7.25% for Illinois. Not sure how other border states do it, or other states in general. Also in Illinois, trade-in value is deducted from the sales price when computing the tax (New law now limits it to the first $10,000 for passenger vehicles, but traded in trucks are not considered "passenger" vehicles (First division vehicle), but rather a "cargo" vehicle (Second Division)). Local taxes may be added above the 7.25%.

Buying out of state didn't seem worth the hassle. Dealing with tags with the DMV closed helped with my decision to purchase locally.
IMHO service seems to be better from the selling dealer.

Sure, so the local price I was offered was ultimately 4% over MSRP (27,095$) MSRP * 1.04= 28,180$ plus 420 Doc fee total = 28,600 (plus tt&l or in GA we call it TAVT)

That was through Herling Ford in Edgefield SC, but (“work” local) but local to where I live was only 1-2% less

Tom at Chapman offered (and we accepted) no deposit, 4% under invoice. Invoice on that same build is 26,466$

26,466$ * 0.96 = 25,407$

Add to that the 394$ PA Doc fee and the 200$ CD charge and before TAVT it comes to 26,001$

28,600$ - 26,201$ = ~ 2,400$ so just in pricing we saved 9% the other 3 come from some specific issues with us being a charitable organization (donation of DYC and corporate graphics and a portion of our wheelchair lift were dependent on pricing of the vehicle in other words if we came in under an amount they increased the donation to encourage fiscal responsibility)

Mass gets it up front. If you want to register a vehicle purchased out of state (new or used) you have to show proof that you paid sales tax in that state. If you paid nothing or less than the Mass rate, you have to cough up the difference in order to title and get plates.

There's nowhere to hide.

We're also supposed to pay "use tax" at income tax time for any purchases made out of state. This is self reported so guess what the compliance rate is.

My tags are transferable (handicap) and I will pay my TAVT to Chapman Ford, they transmit the info to Georgia DMV. Literally all I have to do is send certified funds to Chapman (Bank handles that) and drive 45 minutes to the CD dealer, bolt on my plate, and drive/take possession. Insurance is through USAA and the App on my phone. Confirm the VIN and they transmit data to GA DMV.

Yep, you gain almost nothing by buying out of state in Mass (or NY for that matter). Also found out through ordering the Maverick that the doc fees are not only not something the dealers will waive, but so established now that the state is actually taxing the doc fees.

The discount relative to MSRP or invoice is quite a big difference by the way. Wish OP had specified
