I understood the question to be discount from final local price for purchasing a CD.

That could be different for different people. If your local dealer will give you invoice with minimal fees, then the available CD discount is less. If you only have gouging dealers local, then you could save a lot.

I value doing business locally, but I'd have a bad taste in my mouth buying from a gouger and would be reluctant to deal with them for parts, service and accessories anyway.

I value a local relationship, not a local scalper. I'll pay some premium for the former.

Buying local at MSRP + a ridiculous $799 document fee, but receiving a price I am very happy with on my trade in vehicle. Also saves me time and is convenient… that’s worth something to me.

As far as I know, I will not be charged a premium. I paid a $500 deposit when I placed my order. I was told the deposit is refundable and/or transferable, because my dealer is confident they can sell my hybrid if I decline to buy.

I will pay full price (MSRP-available discounts/incentives), but no additional charges that I know of. There is always the possibility they could attempt to ~bleep~ me over when/if my hybrid arrives, so we shall see.

I purchased from Dick Masheter Ford in Columbus, OH.
This is the exact same situation for me. Msrp with a refundable $500 deposit. If they attempt to screw me after the fact I’ll just take my deposit and say goodbye.

I dunno that I can put an exact % on it but I can say that in this situation, the best deals that could be found were no where near worth it to me to go out of state.

- The best deal I've seen is 4% off invoice. On my build, that would've saved me a grand total of around $1,100 over X Plan with a local dealer.
- I don't think that 4% off invoice dealer required a deposit but neither did the local dealer. Still $1100 savings.
- Let's say I got lucky, and only had a $200 courtesy delivery fee. Now I'm down to $900 savings.
- Obviously, tax savings when trading in would chew up a huge chunk of that $900 but I'm still gonna pocket more by selling my trade in right now outright vs what I'd get on trade along with the tax savings. So we'll call that a wash. But if you are trading in? Non-local already doesn't make sense to me.
- Once that vehicle gets headed my way though, I'm committed to either buying it or MAYBE (if you're lucky) coming out of pocket to pay for the delivery itself, which I'd bet has to be at least $900, prolly closer to a thousand.
- And remember, it's possible my build could be delivered/en route before I ever even get a chance to drive one of these.

So, essentially, the value proposition for me was:
Is the possibility of saving $900 (assuming I like the vehicle and want to purchase it once I get some seat time) worth the chance of either losing that same $900 (or more) OR, even worse? Being stuck with $30k worth of something I don't want?

Total no brainer to me to go local and guarantee myself that my "worst case scenario" will have cost me exactly $0.00. If the X-Plan wasn't so cheap, I'll definitely concede it'd make the choice a bit harder. But given the ease of acquiring X Plan pricing? I can't imagine why anyone would consider paying MSRP, much less paying over that, unless they're just not aware.

I went to my local Ford dealership that`s only 4 miles from my home that I have bought 5 other Fords from over the last 35 years and I talked with them about the new Maverick and they act like they had no clue what I was talking about. Then we talk about when they did find more out about the new Maverick that they now charge $2,500 on top of the MSRP on any new Ford vehicle on there lot that they sale, in stock or if I order it. They also had a $700 doc fee and a $1,000 required deposit . When they told me all this it help me to make my mind up to buy from Chapman Ford with there 4% below invoice and I will save roughly $5,000 on buying from them. This is a no brainer for me.

yeah, if I were treated that way, I'd find another dealer as well. That's not a relationship.

Local dealer is doing X-plan plus FordDrivesU. Solid deal in my mind and no worry of out of state purchase logistics.

All other things equal, I will go local, but living in a small country town, there is often a significant markup on most things, especially if you can't get it at Wally World. As for the Maverick, the local Ford dealer was not even attempting to add any dealer markup, so no need to go to the big city.
same here. Only 1 local Ford dealer, but they are not adding onto MSRP, no deposit required, and If I don't like it when it arrives and test drive it- just walk away and they put it for sale on the lot.

Taxes will be local anyway. At least every state I know of is going to get their share. In Georgia we have some weird laws regarding vehicle taxes and what you pay in taxes has little correlation to what you paid for the vehicle. Instead the taxes are based on what the State thinks your vehicle is worth. Apparently this went into effect in 2013
We have this in CO as well. They call it "private property tax" and I've been burned by it 2x already- 1 was registering my then 5 year old Grand Cherokee that I paid several thousand below MSRP for and 2nd time was a new toybox trailer built out of state that gave me a $2k internet discount on. CO didn't care- charged MSRP on both with no depreciation  Only good thing is you can deduct on state taxes.

Can't say how it works in other states, but in California a chunk of sales tax goes back to municipalities, for police, fire, etc. That's why I always try to shop local, and locally owned business over chains.

In this case, I had a bad experience attempting to order in my own county -- just couldn't get anywhere with them. So I went to one of the adjacent county's Ford dealers and ordered from them instead.

Mass gets it up front. If you want to register a vehicle purchased out of state (new or used) you have to show proof that you paid sales tax in that state. If you paid nothing or less than the Mass rate, you have to cough up the difference in order to title and get plates.

There's nowhere to hide.

We're also supposed to pay "use tax" at income tax time for any purchases made out of state. This is self reported so guess what the compliance rate is.

Plus in Mass if you have a trade in, that price is subtracted from the taxable amount of the sale so you can save a significant amount by trading in. Most dealers that I have bought from will also register the car with the RMV, transfer your plates and get an inspection before you pick it up. At delivery you simply remove the plates off your old car, slap them on the new one and drive off. That will typically be included in the doc fee which IMHO is super helpful. The last thing I want to do is go to the RMV.

The discount relative to MSRP or invoice is quite a big difference by the way. Wish OP had specified
I don’t see how it makes a difference I mean literally how much more are you willing to pay to keep your transaction local. So if someone is charging 10,000$ for something one place, including shipping etc. and locally you would be willing to pay 11,000$ so you buy it locally, then your answer would be 10%.

I ask because I am wondering things like how discounting really affects local monetary velocity, how much of a premium being local will support, things like that.

In my case it is dependent on if I am me, or representing the foundation, etc. In our charter, and with some funds we are required to attempt local first. After all we are trying to help our local community. But, I also have a responsibility to be fiscally responsible. Every 400$ Saved allows us to not only help another family, but also pays local contractors for their work.

Maybe that makes more sense, or confuses things more.

TL;dr
How much more for something would you be willing to pay, to keep all of it local?

Wow! Your local dealer is short-sighted. I'd walk also.
I placed my order locally on 6/14 based on MSRP and it was barely $1000 between invoice and MSRP, but I wanted some discount. So I reached out to Tom and got the 4% deal price, a legit $2200 savings. Went back to my dealer and they went to the owner to check and he said MSRP or nothing unless I could get an X plan PIN. At the time, I didn't think MSRP was unreasonable, especially with only $139 doc fee. I figure cost of buying from Tom in PA (shipping, or, gas, time from work, doc fees, etc) would net me a few hundred $ in savings, but might further risk damage in transit or have local service issues if this new production vehicle gives me and a local dealer fits. This was all before the Courtesy Delivery option became more an option. I've done many fleet cars over the years and taken delivery locally when the fleet purchase was done far away. The dealers don't mind, but they don't give much in the way of service either, especially if you want to test drive and take up their time when they know there is no commission or trade-in to benefit from.

As it turns out, my father in-law retired from Ford and I was able to get his A-plan. I had Supplier price benefits for almost 30 years and always bought GM and Jeep products, so my only Fords were fleet cars. I still don't know what the final A plan price will be, but it should be comparable to doing the 4% deal through Tom net of any additional costs. From what I can tell, the dealer does not have invoice pricing yet that will show the A/X plan price. I do have a VIN now, so info should start flowing better now. Anyone else been able to confirm A plan pricing?
