Tell them exactly what you did, let them fix your error, and pay them to fix it. Don't try to hide it, that will just cost you more billable hours. Sorry.
He is already looking at $200 for that alignment. At this point I would say nothing other than I need to take the car back and I'm OK with the wheel how it is

That works too, we could talk him through a wheel reinstall. But now that the alignment has been changed, will the wheel be straight when the wheel position is corrected?

In this case, I think confession is good for the soul, and would fix his truck most effectively.

Is Trolls 3 coming out? Maybe this is an ad campaign?

Ok I'll play along some more.

I think there is a very good likelihood that you're going to get a bill from the dealership for all of this. If it were me, I would go take the car back and tell them never mind I think I figured out the problem.

Do me a favor, block out your personal information and upload an image of the paperwork from the dealership from when you dropped the car off with the complaint in clear sight. I'd love to pin it up on a special wall I have, plus I think you are more likely to get help here.
I don’t understand why you are being rude about this. Obviously I screwed something up and didn’t want to screw up my brand new truck up even more than what it was. Clearly I’m a novice at this and it will probably cost me and make me never want to do anything like this again, but I don’t need you to tell me that I’m an idiot.

Only reason I posted anything was to help out someone else if they had something similar happen to them.

I do appreciate the guidance from @Bushpilot and @TobyGadd

I am now leaving the dealership without being charged and steering wheel on correctly.

No alignment on the planet would even touch a 60' tilt on the steering column... plus I doubt they even touched the steering wheel during the alignment. They likely put the steering pin in a neutral position from below the car and then align from there.

The whole alignment thing is what makes me not believe any of this.

But my apologies Caleb. I'm glad you got it worked out. That was a VERY quick resolution after you "took it to the dealership this morning."

Attach the paperwork from the dealership and I'll buy you some Starbucks to make it up to you.

Make sure you give that dealership more business in the future, they treated you well!

I did tell them I took the wheel off. Didn’t say anything else.
I am surprised they bothered with checking alignment ...

Now I am second guessing myself saying you should give them more business.

Happy that I could help. Admittedly, I wasn't sure whether you were playing with us--but I tried to be careful to offer a helping hand before jumping to conclusions.

While I try not to laugh at people, I am very willing to laugh at amusing situations. From the perspective of people who frequently work on mechanical things, this situation is actually hilarious. Roll with the punches, and chalk this down as a learning experience. Anyone who has ever turned a wrench has done something hilarious at one point or another.

Edit: For what it's worth, I'm not a certified auto mechanic. But I have worked on mechanical things for decades, and I have been certified to maintain and repair sophisticated printing equipment.
And I am an aircraft mechanic ...

Not me, I am an aircraft mechanic! 🤡

I am a nothing mechanic.

But have dealt with dealership service departments MANY times. Nothing about this anecdote fits any reality I have ever lived in.

I'm happy to PM him a $5 gift card if we can see the paperwork.

An another note, interesting that these switches are hard to come by now...

Not a lot of latitude for errors in your profession! Working on planes would be amazing--but also scary as hell knowing that even a small error can kill many people.

Didnt get any paperwork. However they must’ve changed the programming back to as built because the switches don’t work currently.

I wasn’t looking for anything by posting. Just wanted to share the experience I was having for other people to use if they get into the same situation.

And while looking back at it now, it is funny but I can tell you the weekend was not very relaxing because I thought I really screwed something up.

I'm still struggling to understand the thought process.

Removed wheel
Replace wheel
Wheel crooked
*mystery*

Wouldn't everyone's immediate first thought be to remove the wheel, rotate it so that it is straight, and tighten it back up?

Feel like I'm missing something...

I'm puzzled that they would re-program the modules. Maybe they were concerned that your programming skills are similar to your wrenching skills, and they didn't want to return the truck to you in a "non-factory" configuration, in hopes of avoiding liability/safety issues? Running an alignment suggests that they were struggling for answers, so maybe they were stumped, and decided to flash the modules back as-built to rule out a computer problem? We'll probably never know.

Now, you'll just need to decide if you feel comfortable using FORScan to tweak your settings again. Or you may want to cut your losses and bring the truck back to the dealer, along with the original switches, for them to revert everything to its original state. To be honest, I might suggest the latter. They'll probably charge you this time, but it might be better than losing more sleep worrying that you've messed up your truck. Totally up to you, of course, but remember that errors in FORScan can have serious consequences.

Yes. But he's already stated that he doesn't have much mechanical experience. People do illogical things when they get in over their heads, especially when anxious.
