Santa Cruz, not Santa Fe that's the SUV and it is available in Hybrid.

The thing is Hyundai has a totally different business model than Ford. Ford will sell you a vehicle it doesn't have, Hyundai won't. When you "order" a Ford, you're actually ordering something they will build for you months down the line. When you try to "order" a Hyundai, you're basically just telling the dealer your preference and if something happens to become available in the trim you picked then they'll let you know. Santa Cruz's even with huge dealer markups are still disappearing from dealer lots within a week of being delivered, so Hyundai has no problem selling every one they make.

But that shouldn't be surprising, because even unpopular models aren't sitting long on dealer lots due to national inventory shortages in general.

I feel really stupid for example for not buying a BMW i3 when they were going for about $14K with zero interest from the public when gas prices were so low in 2020 and I ALMOST put money down but got talked out of it, and now the same trim/mileage are going for $25K on average.

Ford will sell 5 or 10 Mavericks for every Santa Cruz sold. Hyundai doesn't care, they'll sell all they make.

Ford has a built in "fan base" if you will. Ford is seen as a truck when the SC isn't.

If the santa cruz were 10k less and came in a hybrid, I would have one already.

I like the maverick a lot, and I am still getting it, but the allocation system and being in the dark on my order is seriously making me consider if I would ever buy from them again

as far as actual timelines go, no Hyundai did not "beat Ford to the market". They showed Santa Cruz as a concept vehicle at a car show like 5 years ago- and then silence. Rumors of the Ford compact truck started like 18 months ago, then we saw leaked images of the patent/TM for the Maverick tailgate design, the leaked picture of Maverick tubs at Hermosillo factory, and then a ton of pictures of test mules in Camo all over the states. Right about then Hyundai has a reveal for the SC with expected production and delivery dates. Shortly after Ford confirms Maverick is a real product and announces reveal for June 2021 with open reservations, followed by orders and forecasts deliveries beginning "in Fall 2021".

Later Ford reveals the Maverick program was expedited internally using new strategy and the whole thing went from approved project to production ready sign off in like 18-24 months IIRC?

So yeah, the SC arrived in showrooms in very limited quantities ahead of Mavericks, so technically they were 1st to market (with Dealer units for sale), but I wouldn't say Hyundai "beat Ford" any step of the way.

I'm a Hyundai guy. Last 4 cars. Love em. But I got a build date on my Lariat hybrid.
There simply is no comparison between the thought process for the 2 vehicles. Hyundai took an existing model, chopped some off, tricked it up well and here's the Santa Cruz.

Ford had created (out of its own parts bin) a brand new segment with a vehicle which is attracting an entirely new base of customers, many who never considered Ford before by offering more value at a low price point.

The difference will be massively evident when municipalities start dumping F150's , Rangers, Explorers and snap up base model hybrids.

Maverick sales will trounce Santa Cruz sales. If production can be ramped up, I bet it's by a factor of 10 to 1 or even more.

I ordered a Maverick and havent even set foot in a dealership or looked at one in person, but seen plenty of reviews that I trust. Also never even researched a santa cruz or their website, not interested.

Haha… or they’ll at least promise that many Mavs to people. They have the orders to do that, but haven’t proved they can actually sell that many yet. They have to build them. Hyundai made a fatal mistake by not making a hybrid SC. If they did, they would seriously convert a lot of people waiting forever for a hybrid Mav.

My gut tells me that all they will care about is the bottom line though, so until they reach a point where they can make more SCs than people will buy, no craps will be given about consumer demand.

I think if we get a hybrid, we'd probably have to wait for a mid-cycle refresh.

Hyundai headquarters is close to home, I see hydrogen fuel cell testers and other mules all the time. I honestly love the way the SC looks. I ordered a Maverick because it checks more boxes for me, I have a good history with my Ford cars, and love everything about the Maverick.

That being said.. if they did a HFC Santa Cruz, I'd contemplate purchasing one. (in addition to)

I don't know how they feel about it, but I do giggle about the FB ads comparing the two.

Can't wait to see police departments asking for v6/v8 engines and upgraded suspensions for "police interceptor" packages. Then selling them 5 years down the road when they hit 100k miles.

Yep, I'm one of those customers. Never even considered a Ford before the Maverick was announced. I've owned Subarus, Toyotas, and Hondas--but never an American vehicle. But Ford succeeded in winning my business by making a really nice hybrid truck, and selling it for a great price. Time will tell whether Ford will win my ongoing loyalty, which will be mostly determined by the reliability of my truck. Here's hoping that they do!
