Both Volt and Prius when new come with low rolling resistance tires. Replacement tires other than OEM can cost you as much a 3 mpg less distance on the Volt since it is a plug in. I don't think the Prius suffers as bad. The Prius came with a spare tire, the Volt had a small pump with bottle of green goo. Weight added inside a vehicle is also a killer of MPG. Tool bags, accessories, etc.
Weight does make some difference, but I never found it had a big impact. Even fully loaded with all my work tools, never seems to make that much difference. Maybe if you are putting in 500+ pounds of gear? Even with 3 people and all our gear I would hit the rated MPG or better in my Hybrid. I only noticed a drop with the tire swap, went from averaging 39MPG to 35MPG, but still prefer the new tires, far better handling particularly during the icy winter months.

Regenerative braking makes all the difference when laden. It lets you recover the added energy needed to speed up a heavier load, and use it to extend a glide.

I just changed tires in the Escape, Michelin CrossClimte2, and also found a drop in mileage (not unexpected). While it also got colder, the old tires seemed to get better with age... as if RR at 3mm tread depth was much lower than at 8mm. CC2 are 8mm depth now, so time will tell!

I have previous generation Cross Climate+, it's been just over a year since I got them, no improvement in fuel economy yet. Before that I had a set of General RT43's, they have great fuel economy and did well the first winter, after that winter was okay, but not great. Wouldn't go back, love the Michelins, quieter and better cold weather performance without a doubt. After rain the other day we had a nice cold snap, road was a sheet of ice, ABS/traction control never got tripped.

Just a note for others — the dashboard power level is in total kw, it does not explicitly help you distinguish between using HVB source vs ICE source of power at ant point.

But there may be an infotainment menu that shows it in a cool colorful illustration? Anybody got a pic or video of that in action?
Yes it does. There is a screen that shows hybrid mode, electric mode or charge mode.

I've noticed that if I keep power usage under 10%, the gas motor does not come on. I wish there was an indicator that shows when the gas engine is being used or the electric motor is being used, battery charge level, etc. like on a Prius.

there is nothing like my 2016 Prius so we can wish all we want but we can use what we got. The middle display has one you might try. It is a training one. Or check the manual to see what it's called. See above your post "coach" mode.

it has 3 elements you wish for
charging
electric
hybrid

What is the maximum speed before the ICE has to rotate? I know there is a mechanical limit before MG2 is turning too many rpm's with the ICE both off and not turning.

There is an indicator for that. EV coach on the screen

I have kept speed at 55-60. I have not been able to get above 40 from a rolling start.

ICE runs above 85 mph. Check the manual. It runs an oil pump that circulates oil over the stators.

The traction motor is directly geared to the wheels, so it's redline would limit top speed, barring a limiter.

Not what I'm talking about.

I'm sure above 85 ice has to run, but I'm wondering how fast you can go before the ICE has to even rotate to keep mg2 below safe rpms.

Mg1 is tied directly to the axle, but mg2 opposes the ICE with a planetary gear set between.

On the Lariat Sync3 system there's also a powerflow screen in the "Apps" section that will show an animated version of your truck and where the power is coming from as well as why "Engine running due to heater settings" etc. I don't know if this screen exists on the XL or XLT.
