Weight does make some difference, but I never found it had a big impact. Even fully loaded with all my work tools, never seems to make that much difference. Maybe if you are putting in 500+ pounds of gear? Even with 3 people and all our gear I would hit the rated MPG or better in my Hybrid. I only noticed a drop with the tire swap, went from averaging 39MPG to 35MPG, but still prefer the new tires, far better handling particularly during the icy winter months. Both Volt and Prius when new come with low rolling resistance tires. Replacement tires other than OEM can cost you as much a 3 mpg less distance on the Volt since it is a plug in. I don't think the Prius suffers as bad. The Prius came with a spare tire, the Volt had a small pump with bottle of green goo. Weight added inside a vehicle is also a killer of MPG. Tool bags, accessories, etc.
