Don‘t shoot the messenger..
Ford has used fuel analysis in the past to deny diesel engine warranty claims where the failure was in the high pressure fuel system. This happened to a member of Ford Truck Enthusiasts forum a number of years ago When he had a Biocide in his truck Due to extended storage durations (months).
I just merely brought up the fact that Ford had change the spec from WSS-M2C962-A1 for 2025 to WSS-M2C972-A1 for 2026 Maverick Hybrids.
I’m going to be using the Ford spec oils - but you do whatever you want to do At the drain intervals that you like and can afford.

Then there’s always the fine print.

You're reading that incorrectly. It recommends Motorcraft oil and filter. It requires the use of 0W20 full-synthetic oil (other brands can be used, but only if they meet the specifications listed).
I think I'm reading it right, it says the specifications are recommended,. not required.

That is incorrect. You can use other brands of oil or filter, but only if they match the required specifications.

Just in case some of you were not aware, Ford changed the spec for required oil on the 2026 Hybrid.

Interesting. Probably backwards compatible. Once we run thru our hopefully pre-bought oil-shortage increased-prices purchases.

Could be that the new spec supersedes the previous - I haven’t read that anywhere..

The one thing I will really miss with my Honda Ridgeline is being able to change the oil without even jacking it up. You access the filter through the wheel well.

That noted, I always join up on boards like this because after going through the nonsense (not that the nonsense can't be fun) there is always a lot of good info.

With every car I've owned since these boards came around there have always been a few that have sent their oil off for analysis. I can't think of a single time that the results didn't come back that the oil was still good. With that in mind I will change when the truck instructs me to. It helps avoid any warranty issues.

My son has a work truck that gets abused and leaks oil. Since I generally change my own oil I take him what I take out and he runs it through his work truck. It's going to leak out. His truck is still running strong but leaving it's mark. 300,000 miles.

Again, it says "recommended", not "required."

The oil specifications for the Ford Maverick Hybrid are requirements, not mere recommendations. Using non-compliant oil in the 2.5L hybrid engine can lead to poor performance, cold-start issues, and potential warranty complications.

To keep your engine protected, the oil must meet the following strict criteria:

Viscosity: SAE 0W-20
Type: Full Synthetic only (synthetic blends are not authorized for this specific hybrid engine)

Official Specification: Must meet Ford specification WSS-M2C962-A1

Why These Specs Matter:

The 2.5L hybrid engine cycles on and off frequently, which causes it to endure a high number of cold starts.

Ford formulated this specific oil to ensure rapid flow, low volatility, and proper wear protection under these unique hybrid operating conditions.

Agreed -

unless you have a 2026 Maverick Hybrid since that spec was updated to WSS-M2C972-A1

Is this recommend or required?
(recommend is in the sentence for Motorcraft brand)

ENGINE OIL CAPACITY AND SPECIFICATION - 2.5L, HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (HEV)

Use oil that meets the defined specification and viscosity grade.
If you do not use oil that meets the defined specification and viscosity grade, it could result in:
  • Component damage that your vehicle warranty does not cover.
  • Longer engine cranking periods.
  • Increased emission levels.
  • Reduced vehicle performance.
  • Reduced fuel economy.

I would never use any oil that does not meet or exceed the "recommended" specs. I'm just perplexed that Ford doesn't say "required."

Ford has specific required specifications for oil and other fluids. If another non-Ford manufactured product meets those specifications then they are fine. The specifications are not suggestions or recommendations, they are requirements.

"Use"

With implications given for non-use.
One being warranty - if they so desired to go after that angle.
They can't force you - but can inform you of possible consequences.
