Old habit for me - from the days of way too many pumps gushing even on the slow setting - and tripping very early.
I always stand right there - and could hear it very frequently.
Prior Rav4 was prone to it. Tank almost empty, got 10 gal - there was 3 more available minimum.
So habit was 3rd click - at least the QT pumps would do the 2nd press at slow speed - but I could still hear the problem bend in the neck.
2 click was frequently the almost one. 3rd was just to make sure I didn't mishear things.
And on that vehicle - no where near topping off to have fuel overflow. Never an issue.

Now - I've backed off to 2nd click, and still hear some pumps being a tad fast and gushy even on the slowest speed. I'm not holding it, but on the auto-hold slowest speed. I can hear the sound is still down the neck on the 2nd click when it's going slower, on those pumps that do that.
We don't have those vapor covers muffling the whole thing - can hear it very well.
Some of the early auto-off is caused by inserting the spout too far which does not allow the spout to align perfectly. The 2022 manual has a picture showing the correct angle. A few pumps (maybe my Costco which being 20 miles away gets used about every 6-8 weeks) have the vapor covers and will early off if inserted to the cover. I fill up usually at about 120 miles remaining to E and can usually tell if gallons pumped is close to what I expect. He is retired now but one of my HS buds worked at Tx weights/measures checking pumps, locking those non compliant until they were recalibrated. I expect not as frequent with new computerized equipment these days but I have no idea. I would give him a heads up occasionally if I hand calculated with a fill-up significantly low mpg.😇

could be. vehicles now days, just stop and pull the fuel hose out after it automatically shuts off. Trying to get a small amount of fuel in after it automatically shuts off is just not worth the trouble and possible repair imo
If I may add...Thanks... Pumping gas slowly can potentially get you more fuel, as faster pumping increases gasoline vapor production that gets pulled back into the pump's vapor recovery system, meaning you pay for vapor rather than liquid fuel. While modern pumps are highly calibrated and the effect might be negligible for some, using the slow or medium pump settings is a widely recommended way to ensure you receive the most liquid gas for your money and to fill your tank completely

It was a joke in reply to @Chops . Sorry if it offended. But I do not understand why anyone will try to fill past 1 click. Is it so you don't have to stop 10 minutes sooner for gas? Is that extra 6 ounces going to get you very far? I know some will say it is to accurately calculate MPG. The on screen mpg is good enough for me because I'm never going to run it to empty. I agree with you about over stressing about maintenance. I have purchased 1 used car in the last 40 years and that was last year. 2005 Mustang with 19,500 miles and a service record that showed oil changes done every 6 months, inspections, every year, and a slight front bumper damage that was replaced in 2009. I prefer to buy new and then I have no one but myself to blame for the maintenance of the vehicle.
Truth be told, in this world a lot of people do things that make absolutely no sense to others that in the grand scheme of things don't really matter. It gives us something to argue about. I could probably get a week of intense debate over one clicks or two. Keeps life interesting 😂😂

Meanwhile, I'm 61. And this is my very first brand new vehicle. Ironically I It's the only one I'm getting mildly irritated about concerning how many miles I'm putting on it. I had a 10-year-old vehicle with 130,000+ miles on it. And I barely paid attention to the mileage other than for maintenance. I added about 120,000 miles to that in less than 5 years it wasn't concerned in the least at how quickly the miles were accumulating. It's kind of crazy when you think about it

Honestly , I don't think my one time overfilling had anything to do with the fitting on the cannister breaking. The charcoal had no gas at all in it. I've read about this problem on several forums now, (that same plastic fitting breaking off the canister.

I'm sure it didn't. Truth be told, it usually takes REGULAR overfilling to cause any problems. And even then nothing usually breaks externally. Although overfilling should be avoided, these vehicles aren't as fragile as some seem to think.

Last week I was going from Indy to St.Pete and stopped for my last fuel stop. The fuel door refused to open and a message came up on the dash saying it wasn't opening. It finally did so I started fueling. The nozzle shut off in the first 30 sec. and continued to do that several times. I tried to slow feed it but it still would back up and shut off. I squezzed enough fuel in to get home. The other day I noticed my CEL was on. Who knows when that happened. I haven't tried to refuel yet, but tomorrow I will go to ORiellys and get the code. In three years and 67K miles I have clicked the nozzle 2 or 3 times.

I Always stop after 1st click, AFTER the same thing happened in my 2016 F-150. It took forever to fill truck, perhaps a quart at a time. Required removing truck bed, dropping fuel tank then replacing the stuck valve. Local shop repaired for $700+, dealer wanted several thousand. My lesson learned.

When the pump clicks off - I just round to the nearest .25 cents....example, pump clicks off and the pump is at $12.86 ....I will slow fill to $13.00 and be on my way.

Is that because the attendant with the little change devise strapped to his waist is out of pennies? 🤣
Ford Maverick CEL after over filling tank, anyone else? 1778329665411-os

Seriously though what is the point? I use a credit card with a low limit especially obtained for gas use and fast food drive through use. Pay the bill each month and get rewards. I never have seen the need to round up my gas purchase. My late brother would do that everytime. He was MUCH older than I and when gas was 55 cents a gallon I watched as the pump clicked off at about 10 cents so he wanted to go to the next dollar amount and ended up with gas all over his shoes and pants. I guess that stuck in my head. Now many times in the past before pay at the pump I would NOT fill up but put in $5 and go in to pay so I didn't need change.

FYI=
U.S. Mint ceased production of the penny in November 2025, halting the manufacturing of new one-cent coins for circulation due to high production costs (\(3.69\) cents per penny) and low utility. Existing pennies remain legal tender, but the Federal Reserve has stopped distributing them, leading to retail rounding and a push for a cashless, post-penny economy by May 2026. [1, 2, 3]

Yeah I heard. Hence the comment about lack of pennies 😁
