Refinery flares are the last resort problem solver. Maybe some out of spec crude entered the Refinery and some product has been created that is not useable and cannot be stored or diverted to be reprocessed. So it has to be flared to convert it into a non life threatening product released. Could be a good product but just more than could be stored. Say some light crude which makes more light products per barrel than the refinery designed to process heavy crude somehow entered the stream.
I was just thinking that perhaps some amount of thermal energy could be recovered from that. The one by my house is constant and huge.

42 gallon drum of crude refinement breakdown:
that tells you what comes out from the barrel--but not how much outside energy was consumed in the conversion.

It does not all need to come from corn. Any starch. Any sugar works easily.
Corn isn't even a front runner in the ethanol yield/acre race.

However, for some reason, folks get nervous about growing kudzu on purpose!

a decade or two ago, a couple of entrepreneurial guys found some unclean able sugar can in Brazil (?), and had the bright idea to import it to the US to feed home ethanol fermenters. Their estimated cost/gallon was $1.

But Big Sugar has trade barriers to prevent any sugar coming in, even inedible sugar. (in all seriousness, I'd never heard of Big Sugar before that).

Bio-Butanol is closer to gasoline in miles per gallon.
Butane can be used as a direct substitute for R-12 without modifying cooling systems.

But for some reason, folks get nervous about that under the hood . . .

At the end of the day, it's all solar powered. 🌞

If you're looking for a true energy accounting, I'm not sure it's actually possible to quantify. There are a lot of external costs that get ignored or pushed onto others.

Corn is used for the same reason diesel
Is used in trucks. 125 years of established infrastructure.
Plus corn is easy to store. And with uniformly sized kernels, it is easy to flow and transport in pipes, chutes, grain elevators, funnels, doors, gates, conveyors, mixers, grinders, tanks and vessels. Corn is hard to beat. Just like gasoline is hard to beat.

Oddly shaped roots, hard to handle.
And are they perishable?

But I welcome an all of the above approach.

Haven’t read all 11 pages, but are there issues using non ethanol fuel in the hybrid Maverick? I have non ethanol gas delivered to the house for use in outboards, old cars and small engines. Caused issues in my wife’s 2020 Pacifica. I would like to use non ethanol in the Maverick hybrid unless otherwise warned against using it.

Why did it cause issues with your 2020 Pacifica?

I should think it would like it.

The answer like most things is: It depends.

Also I have to ask what fuel do you have delivered and by whom? Is it "street legal" fuel? Because not all fuel is.

Over a period of time, the fuel filter became clogged and the injectors were compromised. The entire fuel delivery system was cleaned out including dropping the tank. It was covered under warranty. I have non ethanol delivered to the house in bulk and use a filter in front of the hose/nozzle. Been buying from the same source for 10 years. No other customers complained about the fuel. The service receipt had a notation that said not to use non ethanol free any more.

91 ethanol free is $7.49 a gallon here! I only use it in my lawn mower and snow blower.

Any warranty issues with using the more expensive non-ethanol fuel in the 2.5 Hybrid Maverick? Does Ford recommend a cheaper low octane ethanol based fuel only due to marketing reasons to show the public that its a lower annual cost to own a Maverick?

At .50 per gallon you are paying (on average $6.00 more per tank) or the equivalent of 2 gallons of Regular 87 octane.

5 additional MPG does not justify the .50 per gallon.

The best benefit of True Gas is your engine will have less water condensation in the fuel system and the engine should last longer.

I specifically buy True Gas for use in Chainsaws, mowers and generators along with Stabil treatment. Chainsaws, mowers and generator don't get put to use as often.
I use ethanol free gas in all my equipment where gas may sit longer than 30 days. That includes the Hybrid Mav, my wife's 23 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, mowing equipment and boat motors. I can't remember that last time I had to deal with a plugged up carb or fuel injection issue with real gas. With the plugin hybrid it alerts you when the gas in the tank gets stale. But she only fills up once every couple of months and so far no issues. It's worth it too me to pay the small extra per gallon.

It has been posted that the hybrid maverick is not had fuel added for a period of time (6 months? Don't remember) that it will run ice longer without electric drive until gas is added.
