Makes sense since it would probably kill the Tacoma sales and they don't want that.

Now on Fords side what I could see happening is them dropping the Ranger in the US when the second gen Maverick comes out. I could also see the second gen Maverick growing a little getting a 5,000lb towing and 500lb hitch weight capacity and a 5 foot bed.
If you could wave a magic wand on the 5k tow 5’+ bed I am in, but doubt they can “just do that” and keep hybrid getting 35+ mpg. New EV does not replace Ranger as it’s an EV and Ranger is ICE. Ranger in US hasn’t gotten the hybrid phev treatment it has in Australia thus there is a gap in options available that some form of Phev/Rhev will need to fill someday (sounds like they think the next gen Lightning will do that but while that would compete w RamCharger it still leaves gap in mid and small size product line, so this is all TBD. ). Get more popcorn.

'25 changed the the headlights and front bumper, added a larger center screen and semi-digital gauge-cluster. Added the Lobo and awd hybrid and that was it. Gen 2 will redo the exterior, interior and add more option packages and possible plugin hybrid. They will focus on cost-more for the same cost if they can, otherwise they may push the Gen 2 out a couple more years depending on any competition. '27 will give us an idea of what they are up to.

They had great fuel economy. But required planning and patience when merging into traffic 😂

Sounds like you want a Ranger. Ir any other mid sized truck.

well the new Ranger about the size of 90s F-150 somehow we lost our way.
Yep, and the Maverick is the overall size of the first gen Dakota. Compacts are equal to the old mid size. Mid size are equal to the old full size.

Full size HD trucks are stupid sized. They are as big as my old F550 Extended cab, extended wheelbase tow truck. Thankfully they don't weigh 7 tons empty like it did.

Exactly right.

My 1998 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab with a 6' bed was this size:

Length201.7 in.
Overall width without mirrors70.3 in.
Height64.9 in

and my 2022/23 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid with a 4.5' bed is this size:
  • Overall Length: 199.8 in.
  • Width (without mirrors): 72.6 in.
  • Height: 68.7–68.8 in
In 2014 when my 1998 Ranger was at end of life neither Ford or others offered a truck that was near the same size until the Maverick was announced in 2021 when I jumped on it immediately.

I actually think that the Maverick is bigger than it should be. Prior to 96, the F150 was virtually the same size as the Maverick unless you got the extended cab. The 86 Ranger was actually a bit smaller than the Maverick. Ever since then the midsize and large pickups have been getting bigger every year, and now are typically 2ft longer and 1ft wider. Its time to bring back the F100, the original Ranger and the Courier-sized trucks, and get rid of the oversized and overpriced F150 entirely.

The only thing that made these turtles less dangerous was the fact that even the normal cars were semi turtles, and the speed limit was 55 during the reign of the turtles. So most of the traffic was traveling around 60ish. With today's limits of 70 and most people driving 75ish +, they'd be super dangerous today in anything country roads . They could possibly be minimally acceptable on occasion on a low traffic section of interstate with a long entrance ramp. I had a 1971 Toyota Corolla with a 3KC (1200 cc) engine. There's a place where I'd enter a two lane road going up an incline. Since I was 20 years old, I've used this section to compare acceleration of various vehicles. In the Corolla I'd reach a speed of about 45 at the crest of the hill full acceleration. I'd just be shifting to 3rd gear after red lining in first and second. On the same section a 1979 LTD would reach approximately 55 which was considered a decently accelerating vehicle. A new Nissan versa (slow by today's standards) gets to around 65. My hybrid Maverick easily reaches 80. (Speed limit is 45) . This shows just how far vehicles have come. While my Corolla was slow even by those standards, it was nowhere near the slowest thing on the road.

Geo Metro 3 cylinder engine with a smooth shifting 5-speed manual transmission.
I would rent these when I came out to Vegas before we moved out here.
You could get through three of your 5 speeds before you ever completed a left turn.
45 to 50 miles to the gallon was common.
Yes, it had A/C.

One thing that I keep in mind when speaking of the mpg is that for many of those vehicles, the speed limit was 55 or 65 mph much of our driving was 60-65. Today it's 70 mph. And much of our driving is close to 80 on open highways. I often wonder what kind of mpg they'd get at sustained 80mph driving.

The Geo Metro was introduced 1989.
The NMSL was modified in 1987 and 1988 to allow up to 65 mph limits on certain limited-access rural roads.
I know out here on the open roads of Nevada it would cruise at 70 mph without a problem as long as you weren't going up a mountain. Nevada being the most mountainous state in the lower 48. Sometimes that's hard to do.
You also had the really plan passing anybody. A lot of people compared it to the Volkswagen Beetle and really there was no comparison the Metro had room for 4 people, it had great heat, plenty of headroom and was far more economical and efficient than a Volkswagen Beetle. With front-wheel drive and a set of snow tires they were as good in the snow as a beetle
