Curt 31006 Hitch Spare Tire Carrier Install

Jumping from the OEM P225/65R17s to the meatier P235/65R18 had me driving towards a full size spare instead of the dinky "pizza cutter" Maxxis temp spare. I don't tow anything, however, my XL did come with the Ford OEM tow hitch...decided to use it for a hitch mounted spare tire carrier. Curt's 31006 24-Inch High Trailer Hitch Spare Tire Mount for 2-inch Receiver fit right in. I sourced an 18" steelie from Tire Rack and got that full size mounted up proper. I'm digging the look and of course the security of a full size spare wheel/tire.

Of course if you can't open the tailgate, might as well mount it in the bed. IMO.

Honestly, I don't haul much in the bed, either. When I do, it's usually smaller stuff (groceries, etc.) that I just hoist over the bed side.

Similar small stuff I mostly carry and usually load over the tailgate without the need to open. However recently got tri-fold tonneau cover that is locked until I open the tailgate.

IMO, this is just a waste of money..but your money, your decision...

I, too went with the 235/65R18's and a steel wheel..BUT! they fit under the truck, in the same spot the "dinky" spare sat..with no modifications to the "tire popper".

no need to spend money, lose the backup camera & negate the tailgate opening when one doesn't need to

That’d have to be back to old school turn ya head and look back, but nothing bad about that, still a good practice with or without a camera

All good. Also, this placement helps partially eliminate some of the remaining downward rake I had on the front end, even after the leveling springs install.

I use both the camera and look back, but having the backup camera definitely helps when backing out between two larger vehicles or close quarters.
