Why is it that in every new Ford commercial customers are encouraged to:

1. Place "custom orders"
2. Place these "custom orders" via the Ford web site.

Is this a sign that the dealerships have found this to be a more profitable business model?

Ford is wanting to move to a retail order system with fee if any stock vehicles sitting in dealers lots.

The explanation I got from the sales manager at my local dealership is by moving to primarily custom orders, the manufacturer doesn't have to offer incentives to move the previous year model at the end of the year.

It's so we pay more for a vehicle. Flat out.... The days of $5-6k off MSRP are OVER.

That is what I suspected. And you know what? I don't mind. A big reason people worry about the price that they are paying is the worry that they are paying more than someone else. The old "I was happy I found $5 until my friend found $10". I think it would benefit Ford, the dealers and the customers. Take the agony out of dealing with car buying.

I guess how I feel about that depends on the MSRP.

With the Maverick, I think the MSRP is pretty reasonable. If the build-to-order model moves more MSRPs in that direction it will be a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

In the meantime, dealers are free to discount the MSRP on custom orders. But you probably won't see end-of-year, excess-inventory fire sales.

(FWIW, see this post on how the base Maverick is the same price as in inflation-adjusted Ranger. https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...predecessor-2000-ford-ranger.5823/post-123334)

I agree on both counts.

Yes, built-to-order has always been an option. But for me, there was never an incentive to order and wait (even if it's exactly what I want) when I could have something now and at a heavy discount and that is close enough to what I want.

Now say the only dealer stock is nowhere close enough to what I want and the price isn't low enough to interest me. Then built-to-order becomes the better option. Sure, I have to wait, but it's exactly what I want, and I don't have to race to a dealership or call someone to throw down a deposit before someone buys it out from under me.

But it would suck if you, say, totaled your car and need a new one soon.

Exactly this. Not only do I think the Maverick is priced right to sell, I think that Ford intentionally took advantage of a changing market and the climate of the pandemic to further their approach of made to order sales.

The Maverick to me was priced from day one with made to order in mind, where Ford will not offer large targeted incentives. Discounts will be left to the dealer, in combination with loyalty bonuses to customers and reasonably competitive loan options.

I think it is a smart move and good business direction. They do have kinks to iron though to be sure!

Agree - People exaggerate when explaining their car deals... I have NEVER ran into ANYONE that said, "I just bought a brand new car, and boy oh boy, did that salesman shove it up my ...........!!" Me? I prefer to haggle over the trade-in figure... Hope you just find that this is a prank call by someone that is messing with your mind!!!!!

There are many incentives right now, Ram has $3750 now. Even explorer has $1000. Incentives are here to stay and will grow once we get out of this pandemic and production gets back to normal.

Most likely as they don't have to wait for it to sell, +they get the hold back from the factory

Yes but bronco sports and mavericks have very little markup in them, invoice vs msrp. That’s why some dealers are doing markups.

Agreed. Efficiency generally brings lower prices to consumers.

Consumers only need to know two values over the life of their vehicle ownership, NADA CLEAN trade in and CLEAN retail, depending on the situation. If one takes care of their vehicle, and doesn’t have major imperfections, they should know that average tradein, average retail, or KBB devalues their vehicle, depending on who uses it, car dealer, or an insurance company.

There’s always an outlier that brings down the average, like a beater, or mechanical issues, smokers car, unresolved issues, etc.. Carvana, Carmax and Vroom may be helpful but only to verify the numbers. Nobody has to overpay, they can do fixed pricing via x plan. Taxes and fees always makes it nearly impossible to hit that NADA clean tradein but a miss of $1-2k should be fine for most folks/circumstances, while a $4-5k miss puts folks in negative equity.
