Not being a HYBRID owner I didn't know this but I thought I should pass it on. Interesting and informative video. Worth a watch.
I didn't know there was an oil made especially for HYBRIDS.

“Engineering Explained” is a great channel. That nerd has been around for years & been very educational.

He did a very enthusiastic video explaining why he bought a Maverick a while back.

And then despite the claims of what should occur that is damaging to them - read the actual oil analysis reports that many members have posted.

What should be isn't always the case of what happens.

Hard on engines???

My friend, whose 2008 Prius still has just about original everything (and loads of miles), apparently hasn't gotten that memo.
Did you watch the video?

Mobil One infomercial designed to panic you into buying it, when all these scenarios have been covered in the design of the engine and oils.

Meaning the myths quoted come from the 70s before oils did that and PCV was uncommon and engine management systems didn't make sure an engine got up to temperature.

This is part of the reason why when you've kicked on the IC it won't power down if you take your foot off, it goes to predetermined temp to cook off water etc.

So anyway if you cobbled together a hybrid with 1970s tech in engines, lube and manual/vacuum control systems, you would have all the problems mentioned. Therefore I would advise not doing that.

Using a world class motor oil made specifically for Hybrids - seems a smart decision. What oil do you use?

Great video, great explanation. I still hate the crap out of my Stop/Start system.

A lot, and I mean a lot of those 2nd gen prius had headgasket failures so they aren't immune to engine issues

Sounds like a "Feel good" product to me. Similar to using premium gas when the owners manual recommends regular fuel. Just my opinion, but why doesn't Ford or other auto makers recommend hybrid oil. If using it makes you feel better go for it.

It's the 3rd gens with the issues not the 2nd gen. 2nd gen was basically bulletproof.

No idea what causing the HG failures, many theories but one of the most prominent is the fact that the water pump is electric and on the 2010-2012's they don't throw a code if the impeller detaches and the RPM of the pump increases beyond normal spec. According to a guy who owns a shop, 90% of the HG failures are accompanied by a failed water pump.

I replaced my wife's 2010 water pump pre-emptively at around 140k.

The other theory is heat cycles, because hybrids don't heat up once per drive, they heat up and cool down. Toyota may have tried to cut too many corners with the 3rd gen, who knows.

Another is coolant. People don't swap their coolant out enough and it turns acidic and starts eating the headgasket itself slowly over time.

Good news is Ford doesn't seem to have that issue on their uber-reliable 2.5l duratecs that power their hybrids including the Maverick.
