Before I bought my hybrid Maverick, I remember stories about people losing power on the highway at high speeds. This finally happened to my wife yesterday at 10,000 miles. On the highway, her accelerator stopped working, so she had to coast to a stop. She had to get my son to a game so she shut the power off and tried to keep going. She could go for five minutes and then it she would lose acceleration again. She slowly made her way to the game and called Ford road side assistance. They said it would be four hours for a tow. She instead limped to the nearest dealer with acceleration loss every five minutes. We are waiting to see what they say on Monday. That is pretty terrible for Road Side assistance.

In my Ford app I see the service "The powertrain control system has detected a fault in the high voltage System Coolant Pump. Air may be present in the cooling system."

Hopefully, this is a once-off problem. But I am not confident given all the problems I have heard of on here.

It must have been unnerving for your wife.
Just unbelievable that it was programmed to shut off power under these circumstances, versus giving a warning to pull over when safe.
NHTSA complaint for sure.

Cheers.

Thanks for the comment. I'm sorry my initial story was unclear. I edited it a bit now. The power didn't shut off, but she had no acceleration. Still not a great problem with only 10k miles on it. And having that on the highway isn't safe.

Did it go into limp mode?

I'm not sure what that is. I can ask her. The acceleration stopped working every 5 minutes she said. I can ask her more details.
Ford Maverick Hybrid limp mode.
Definitely not a situation to have happen in any vehicle much less a new vehicle with just 10,000 miles on it. 🙁

It could be that, except total acceleration loss often.

In the previous statement he said" loss of power". Not shut off. And there was a trouble code recorded.

Yeah, misunderstood the original post. That being said, a loss of power at any time creates a serious safety hazard. Imagine if it happens when passing on a two lane road, or crossing a multiple lane highway and you are counting on the vehicle responding as normal. Still believe a warning prior to going into limp mode is correct, if it doesn't already do this.

Cheers.

So your saying the vehicle should destroy itself, like a Kia. Before going to limp mode?

Not at all.

I'm saying the vehicle should prompt with a warning, then give you time to pull over and shut it off without compromising your ability to safely do so. Limp mode is fine after restarting, the driver can make an unhurried decision on continuing the journey at that point. Doesn't seem a case of the vehicle "destroying itself", sounds much like the situation that owners encountered with the clutch slippage fault. If the vehicle did have to sacrifice a component for safety's sake though, so be it. Cars can be fixed.

I wouldn't want one of my kids to have to deal with a situation like this on the highway.

IIRC Hyundai/Kia implemented the use of the knock sensor to detect a failing rod for the same reason, to reduce the risk to the vehicle occupants by warning the driver to pull over. Engine was already done, nothing to save.

Cheers.
