Does anyone have any experience with hard roll up Tonneau covers in the winter? I've read a few comments saying they freeze up making it difficult to open or close.

I'm looking for something available in Canada that doesn't cost $2000 and would work with a bed rack. Not 100% sold on a roll up cover, would be happy to go with something that folds if it's easy to remove

Fellow Canadian here.
I looked at the Roll ups. Biggest issue I se is my wife is short and if you block ½ the rear window she wouldn't be able to see out with the mirror.

I went with the Bison Flip Back. Unlike other tonneaus it fits. Ordered one from another manufacturer. It was too long by a bout an inch.

Upon reading Bison is made for a 4'5" bed ( which is the actual measurement, I checked) others say 4.5 foot! That's an inch different.

Bottom line the Bison fit and was under $700CDN including shipping.

I've a factory hard roll up cover and mine has frozen after a car wash. Once I learned how the mechanism worked I can now get it open if it's frozen, but I sure scratched my head the first time.

I have the Ford hard rollup. I've noticed it frozen twice this winter, both times after a car wash and then driving in -10C temperature and no sun.
I don't have an issue with rear visibility, the interior mirror is higher than the top of the rolled up cover.

How did you manage to get it open? From what I've read people park in a warm garage but I don't have that option

There's a rail with a lip that runs down the length of the bed on each side that hooks into the cover when closed to secure it. Those rails pivot to unlock the cover. Each rail has an arm that contacts the tailgate end of the cover when closed. Closing the very end then locks the cover in place.

When a person begins to open the cover the arms are no longer contacted and springs cause the rails to release the remainder of the cover. Those rails freeze and the springs are unable to release the rail.

By lifting the arm you can release it manually. I can take a picture later today to better show what I mean. My explaination might not be the easiest to understand.

I have the factory roll up and it has frozen a few times on me this winter (southern Ohio). For me, it didn't take a car wash, just sub-25 degree (F) weather and it wouldn't roll anymore. I could undo the mechanism to unlock it from the track, but then it wouldn't roll up. It does block the view out of the rear view mirror for me (I'm under 6' tall) but I generally have only short drives when it is rolled up like that. So far, it's only been a minor inconvenience for me, I like it more than not.

I purchased the Truxedo Sentry hard roll up tonneau cover over 2 years ago. I haven't had any problems with it and live in Wisconsin. I do keep it in the garage but when driving in Winter especially this year with a month of sub zero temps, no problems. Also stays quite dry in a high pressure car wash. Just a tiny bit of water.
Cost a bit over $1,000.00

Thank you.
I asked because the 25's. You can turn on the backup camera while you're driving forward and use it when rollup is blocking some of the view.
Good luck

I went with a retractable bed cover and got it from Truck2Go for $1007 installed by my local dealer. Worth every penny!
