How come you feel the need to tint your front windows in the winter? Do you have a serious eye problem? People who tint their front windows tend to be quite noisy about their rights and such crap, but the reality is that you just can't see very well at night with tint. Tinting past 30% on the front windows will get you a ticket in about half of the states and all of Canada.

OP - are you tinting for "looks" or to actually block UV and heat?

I simply added [had installed] ceramic 80% tint to all windows (not windshield) and it greatly reduced heat gain and is CA legal. It marginally makes the windows darker vs factory. I care about function and not fashion, though.

Purely anecdotal, but I have tinted every vehicle I've owned and never been pulled over for it (20-30%). Even when pulled over for speeding once, the officer never mentioned the tint. It is illegal in WI to tint the front windows, same as many states.

Just tint to your preference, IMO. The benefits outweigh the risks of a ticket (privacy, looks good, keeps inside cooler in the summer). Also, a good rule of thumb is always try to only be doing one illegal thing at a time when driving. If you catch an officer on a bad day they will dig to find anything to tag you with, so just don't give them a reason to pull you over. And don't be a dick to them if they do.

I run 30% in a no tint state and never got bothered. I wouldn't do any more than 20% and you'll be fine. Have a great trip

You're not going to get a ticket for window tint in another state, any more than you would for driving through a 2-plate state when you are registered in a 1-plate state.

Unfounded worries.
Funny you mention that, I got pulled over twice in Texas for not having a front plate. Both times at night and both times the troopers couldn't fathom that we weren't required to have front plates back home.

That was the rule my dad gave me: only break one rule at a time and if you wanna fight with a cop do it in the courtroom not at the curb. He was right on both counts.

When I get pulled over with tint I roll the front windows down and turn on the interior lights, I don't need to make the cop jittery and I've got nothing inside the car that needs to be hidden.

So true. "Law enforcement" aren't hired for their smarts or knowledge of the law. Just their willingness to blindly follow orders and assignments, without question.

Dealer offered for few bucks tinted glass, front driver n passenger sides. I refused that. Not due to the money, but just don’t want a darker tint than what‘s already on them.

You’ll be passing through both “red” and ”blue“ states. Get rid of bumper stickers.
When approached, be nebulous, but respectful, with your answers.
Keep ‘em guessing!

Roll down at least driver's window preferably front and back. Cop needs to see all hands as well as everything possible. A comfortable cop is a friendlier cop. Passenger also wouldn't hurt. Don't go digging around for id until asked. 5% windshield tint PLUS IR 95%+.

In Texas you may have been driving without a front plate and 5 mph less than the posted speed limit. (aka possible "I have to drive nice due to illegal products or Rio Grande Swimmers").

My opinion;
Go ahead and get your windows tinted. Don’t sweat the small stuff like this.

Be more concerned about things like potholes the size of Volkswagons, big bumps and traffic choked down to one lane for miles and miles through Louisiana, which you won’t enjoy driving on (I-10). Unfortunately, it's the straightest shot for you.
If you are on the interstates and are sporting an out of state tag, you probably won’t be picked on anymore than a local. On the other hand, if you have a Cali tag on, are rolling around a backwater town with loud tub thumping music playing and a Cop stops you, make sure you don’t have a cloud of weed smoke coming out of your rig when you roll the windows down, looking like a Cheech & Chong movie scene. That will get you way more than a tint ticket.

Just use your head and you will be fine, my friend.
Don’t be huffin’ blunts or melting fatties in Cajun country!

I am planning a road trip this summer to take my dad who lives in California, back to see the relatives back on the East Coast. We are heading out via I-40 and back through I-10.
Coast to Coast so to say.

I am going to get window tinting on my new 24 Lariat soon and as soon as I mentioned ”TINTED” and “Road Trip” at my dad’s local coffee shop.…
… cue all ”The Barracks Lawyers” adding their 2 cents.

One good ol’ boy said the Highway Patrol will write you a ticket even if it is out of state in Arkansas, another gentleman told a tale of removing his tint in frustration just so he could get through Texas cause the cops couldn’t leave him alone…
Surely this is just “Good Ol’ Boys” being “Good Ol’ Boys” and all. Right?

Do I smile politely, enjoy the stories and just tint to the legal limits of my state?
OR
Do I check the window tints of EVERY STATE I am planning on traveling through and go with the strictest tints? Just to CYA?

The Maverick is registered in California.

Just curious if any of your out of state friends/relatives with darker tints visiting your state have run up against this?
Tint your windows and roll them down in Texas and Arkansas.
