What in Gods name is this engine sound?

Temperature was hovering in the 30 degF range when I started my 2.0L Ecoboost Maverick. This sound was coming from somewhere toward the back of the engine. Anybody know what it is and its source?

No need to worry. My engine makes noises too, but from all sides, not just the back.

The only sound I hear is the normal sound of the engine and it has been driven in temps as low as -20F. That's -29C to those who live in the 51st state.

It would help if the OP posts a video of the sound.

Hummmm I have hybrid and I believe the back of my engine is on the right. In any case if defrost is on it might be the AC compressor running to dehumidify the cabin.

The ecoboost engine sounds horrible when its really cold. Most of that sound is from the high pressure fuel pump. For me, it usually goes away after a few minutes of driving.

the high pressure fuel pump can exceed 3,000 psi. it makes some noise doing that.
