Just picked my Maverick up from getting detailed, ceramic coated and paint protection film.

They said they found this when they pulled the wheels. What is this?

I just had the same part replaced on my Escape under warranty, the boot had a tear. I just figured they would put on a new boot but they replaced the whole axle. Apparently labor wise it is easier to put a new $149 axle on rather than have them work on breaking down the old axle.

I don't like the signs of this. I absolutely hate vehicles that have thin boots that don't last the life of the drive shaft. I used to see it on a lot of Honda/Acura products, but that was years ago...You would think they could design a more durable product these days...
Something that should at least last 100K miles.

Hope this isn't a future problem for all of us, my 70's Toronados had boots that lasted well over 100K miles, they should be able to better that with today's technology.
