PSA: Torx Plus fasteners in your Maverick's bed

After a quick search here, I did not notice any mention of this type of fastener nor it's "correct" bit, which I quickly learned is NOT the same as a regular Torx screw/bit, as applying a regular torx bit could strip your torx plus OEM fasteners/screws/bolts due to the bit's loose and improper fit. And the reason I've posted here is because you'll find three different sizes of this type securing your Maverick's tie-downs, D-rings for those equipped, and also that body-color painted rear panel in the inside of the tailgate.

Drive Angle Difference

The drive angle for a Torx fastener is 15 degrees, whereas for Torx Plus, it is 0 degrees. This helps Torx Plus eliminate the radial stress present at the point of contact between the driver and the recess in the screw head. The drive angle in Torx makes it unsuitable for high-speed assemblies.

So basically you'll need these or other brands' equivalent. The bits fit nice and snug. Great info! I don’t suppose you have information on the thread sizes for each?
Reason for asking is I plan on getting a spray in bed liner and will need to use a thread chaser to re-install the D-Ring cleats and other tie downs plus the bed cubbies I assume.

Well I plan to install my recently delivered Bedrug in the next day or two, and may remount the two D-rings on TOP of the forward end, so I’ll make a note to check the thread size on those bolts, but I’ll remove the other two sizes of torx plus and measure those too, and update all the sizes here for you.

Tbf, I like the fact they don't strip as easy.

But jeez... As if the numerous plastic clips were not bad enough already. I finally got a nice toolbox setup for all my hex shank stuff so I may just throw these into that box on the rare occasion I need them. I think my previous Tacoma was T55 and that was loads of fun getting out. I didn't trust the impact to not strip them.

Is the bed the only place? I'm going to do a rear seat delete next so I'll have to check the couple threads on it here but I think the ones I have seen are standard Torx.

Glad i didn't know about this when i did my bed upgrades, used regular torx with zero problems.

Modular bed liner instructions at Ford refer to the IP40, which is a torx plus, for the front tie downs, but just regular torx in other locations.

I thought my font side cleats were regular Torx when I removed the M6 x 1.0 x 25mm to put in Core Trax. Seems Torx Plus screws are harder to find.
Not even sure if my old eyes would see the difference between Torx and Torx+.

I didn't look at the large bottom Bed D Ring fasteners.

I'd been looking for some M8 Torx Plus for my Core Trax, McMaster Carr only went up to M6:
I don't have Torx Plus bits as of yet, so saved me buying the bits for now by not finding the screws.

When I removed the bed eye hooks on my XL to install bed cubbies, I noticed that the Torx bit felt loose. I thought that I was missing a half size in my cheapo Torx bit set. I applied firm downward pressure on the bolt and it came out and upon re-install tightened without stripping.

Are the under shield covers, the one that has to be removed for an oil change, also Torx Plus?

I installed the drop-in bedliner and the tailgate damper and was wondering why the torx bits I was using were a little loose.

I hoping, and guessing not

! But as far as other areas including the undershield or skid plate, etc, since we know 3 different sizes are used in the bed, might as well pick up a set with a good range of sizes like huunvubu did so that if the torx plus shows up anywhere else, you already have the bits/sockets on hand to prevent delays in completing your project or service.
