Ford Falcon XG Longreach Outback Ute, 1995. A specialised version of the Falcon pickup designed for serious off-road and rural applications, with heavy-duty suspension, increased ground clearance (200mm), and a 126-litre long-range fuel tank. Powered by Ford Australia’s 4.0 OHC straight-6, it came with a unique Hydra-Trak limited-slip differential, a locally developed viscous coupling unit that improved traction of the rear-wheel-drive truck in slippery conditions. It was a marketing move to inject interest into the ageing XD-platform-based ute (dating from 1979).

And long before that, even before Ranger, in the US of A, was the Courier.

Friend of mine had a 1965 Ford Falcon pickup with the 260 ci v8 and a four speed. It went like a bat out of H311 and that’s how he drove it. Finally missed a corner, rolled it and lost an ear. Became a successful auto insurance agent. Go figure. That Falcon pu was about the same size as the Maverick but no back seat

My 1998 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab was very near the same size as the Ford Maverick.

The 1998 Ford Ranger XLT SuperCab and the modern Ford Maverick are similar in size, but the 1998 Ranger is generally longer, narrower, and taller. The 1998 Ranger is roughly 203–211 inches long and 71–75 inches wide, whereas the 2022+ Maverick is about 200 inches long and 72.6 inches wide (excluding mirrors).
Key Dimension Comparisons (Approximate):
  • Length: The 1998 Ranger (approx. 203.6–210.6 inches) is longer than the Maverick (199.7–200.9 inches).
  • Width: The Maverick (72.6 inches) is slightly wider than the '98 Ranger (71.3 inches), according to some reports, though others indicate the 1998 Ranger's body, including mirrors, might be wider.
  • Height: The 1998 Ranger is taller (approx. 74.4 inches) compared to the Maverick (67.7–69.4 inches).
  • Bed Length: The Ranger generally offers a longer bed (approx. 59.6 inches or more) compared to the Maverick's 54.4-inch bed.

There were plenty of small Ford Trucks previously the only reason for the Maverick hate on its size is that Ford Trucks and others have gotten so huge.

When I sold my 1998 Ranger in 2014 Ford had NO Truck that would fit in my garage until the Maverick happened in 2021.

I had a Dodge Rampage back in mid to late 80's. 😂 Must have sparked some memories when I bought my 2025 Maverick.

Back in early80’s as a 16 year old, bought my first vehicle was a 1961 Ford Ranchero with over 250,000 miles on a long ago broken speedometer. Three speed, shifter on column, bench seat, inline 6 cylinder.
Purchased as rusted junker, rebuilt the engine, replaced brakes, speedometer, radio and differential and anything else that was rusted or inoperable; complete manual sand down and spray painted until I could afford a true paint job. Kept it stock, putting my own 100,000 miles in a four year period.
Traded it for a 1972 Chevy C-10 step side short end with a three speed column manual and a 1972 Maverick Grabber. Prettied them both up, got married, had children and sold the truck. Loaned Maverick to brother who promptly drove to San Diego, got lost, stopped to ask directions from a group of guys on a corner, left the keys in the running car, got shoved to the side and the group had itself a complimentary car. Never saw that car again . . .
Should have kept the truck and let the soon to be ex-wife go. Now blessed with current wife of 30+ years, four grown successful children, nine awesome grandkids, a super Aussie pup and a 2023 Lariat hybrid.

Rebadged Mazda.
iirc, the little courier (I think that the one inn the picture is bigger, given the size of the people) was actually built by Ford of Brazil, and rebadged & power trained by Mazda..

And did the Ranchero or El Camino get anything resembling a truck suspension, or did they leave the car suspension under the bed?
