(edit, added pics to end of this post)

bought a used 2022 about two months ago and so far, I love it. Velocity Blue with the carbonized grey aluminum wheels. I like that they aren't black (not hating the black, but really like the dark grey),

It's been outside and needed a wash yesterday and while spraying down the tires I noticed a "white spot" on one of the wheel spokes. Turned the hose on the spot and more white!!!
The grey is flaking off. Probably an 2x3" area at the moment.

I don't think I have even used chemicals on the wheels since I bought it, soap and water only so far, just hasn't been that dirty.

So, I can get the grey paint (found a link to some elsewhere on the forum) but will "spot fixing " that general area of the wheel (maybe just that spoke) even work, or would the entire wheel need repainted?

Is it better to just find a used set of wheels that don't have the issue and swap them out as needed?

Maybe go for powder coating if I can get a similar /same color?

Is this an issue? I didn't find anything searching in the forum about paint failure of the stock wheels.

I'm not against new/aftermarket wheels but I actually like these for stock wheels.

I'm still rolling the stock 5 spoke anthracite wheels oy my '08 Mustang just because I like the look of them as well.

How many miles do you have on the truck? That might still be covered with the 3yr 36k (dont quote me on that). But if you have less than that, its worth a shot to ask. If the body of the truck had paint peeling it would be covered...worth a shot to see if its also peeling on rims that it would be covered as well. paint is paint...

Probably not going to much help there, sitting just above 42k.
Good thought tho, I was wondering about that.

The rest of that wheel and the other wheels appear fine.
No issue with body paint.

It looks like a lot of the shine is gone(especially in the "large spoke void" except in the inside corners). My guesses is either the soap is too acidic and maybe wasnt rinsed off thoroughly (it seems concentrated on one part of the wheel or possibly a brake fluid leak.

What soap are you using?

Looking at your other post you bought it with over 30k miles. Who knows what the previous owner used....

yes. this can happen with abrasive wheel cleaners, and could have simply been scuffed by frequent use of a car wash with brushes.

sucks for the OP. I would get them powdercoated, but in a pinch, he could plastidip. plastidip is only good for like a year or two, typically. it chips off pretty easily.

Good points, it may have been weakened before I got ahold of it.

Did some digging during and after lunch and fund the correct M7 Carbonized Gray paint from Kustom Cans with primer, base coat and clearcoat for around 60 bucks.
I'll likely give that a shot, see how it goes.

I can go powder coat or replace if it goes south.

Factory wheels should have been powder coated when made. Something went wrong at the wheel manufacturing plant, is my guess. It looks some more of the coating will flake off soon.

they are not powdercoated at the factory. it is a simple paint.

powdercoat is much thicker, adds a little weight, and adds time because of the oven.

but you are right in that this could have been a defect at the factory. as the second owner, the OP probably would not be able to get them covered under warranty, but he could try.

Sorry to hear that. I too really like my carbonized Grey rims because my truck is the same colour. To me, it looks really sharp when the rim colour matches the body colour.
