I’ve been looking for a set of black FX4 wheels for my XLT Hybrid with no luck. Has anyone tried painting the XLT wheels? I could have them de-mounted , stripped, power coated, and remounted, but that would come close to the cost of the FX4 wheels. I’m considering raising the truck off the ground, deflating the tires on stock wheels to get the beads away from the rim edge, tape them off, pop out the center caps, use only a single spare nut per wheel, scuff, and coating with 2-3 coats of high-temp 2-part epoxy black gloss paint. Not much to lose......... I would imagine they would look similar to the FX4 wheels when complete....

I was going to paint mine black and buy wheel covers. I went as far as buying the paint and wheel covers, then watched a YouTube video on how to paint them. It was more trouble than it was worth removing each wheel, taping or putting cardboard or index cards around the tires, spraying 2-3 coats of paint, then repeat for the other wheels. I returned the spray paint and wheels, and am leaving the steelies the way they are.

That was my thought too. I found that you can buy the exact same steel wheels already black for pretty cheep online if you want to go that route.

I'm not referring to the 'XL steelies', I'm talking about the XLT standard wheels which look similar to the FX4 wheels but are charcoal in color..

Save yourself all the trouble and just buy a new set of wheels, then sell the old ones. The out of pocket should be minimal after you sell the stock wheels, and the result will be better and faster.

Powder coating them is the only thing that will stand up to the elements.

Two cans of plasti dip hyper dip will give you roughly 7 or 8 coats on the wheels to see if you like the black. On top of that if you do like it, the coating will last a very long time and hold up to the elements. I've had it on my wheels for 6 months now and it still looks brand new after plenty of rain, mud and dirt. It's durable, washable and easily removable if you decide you don't want it on there long term. Best of all it's super cheap, should run you well under fifty bucks to do all four wheels. Don't bother buying their "wheel kit", it's overpriced and you don't need nearly as many cans as they supply in the kit. Powder coating is super expensive and permanent and even if you did rub some of the hyperdip off by rubbing against a curb or something it's easily patchable with light sanding and adding another coat.
