Does the Maverick have a crossover for the front speakers in the XL or is the entire frequency spectrum sent to the door drivers and dash tweeters? Trying to determine how to approach getting a little better sound in the vehicle.

Purely subjective but have found switching the sound setting on the infotainment screen from "all" to "driver" markedly improves the audio to my aged ears.

Yes. It sounds better to me too.

I believe they just rely on the bass blocker cap mounted on the tweeter itself.
Yup. Full range sent to front speakers and tweeters. Bass blocker attached to tweeter. If replacing tweeters, be sure to add bass blockers.

I tried this setting & thought it sounded awful, like all the sound was coming from the drivers door speaker.

I just tried setting it to "driver" and it seems to improve the upper midrange a bit. Think I'm going to bite the bullet and reach for my wallet to start upgrading the speakers. I'm too used to my Mustang's Shaker system.

I found that simply purchasing sound deadening for my first step in the audio field in this truck was the right choice. A little in the front doors and under the rear cubbies to start. Replacing the rear 4 inch speaker with a 4 x 6 also improved the sound quality. While I was in there I put deading in there. Finally I added a down firing dual 2 ohm 8 inch woofer in a ported .40 cubic enclosure. Lastly I covered the rear truck wall with sound deadening. This was a huge help in the bass department and also helped with quieting the cab. I'm done for now.

Which speakers did you replace the rears with? Overall I have been happy with the base XL stereo but I like the fade set to more towards the rear and those sound a bit "weak".

This was not a drop in exactly. It took finagaling to make them work and some sound deadening to pack in the pillar to create a small pocket instead of a open and empty C pillar. Then I mounted the speaker as flush as it would sit and sealed it with more sound deadening. Works great and it keeps up if not surpass the front stock speakers in clarity. I'm fine with that since the front stage is not bad with the amount of bass thats reproduced from the stock XL stereo.
