Cool? I don’t know about that. It has a certain appeal to a certain group of people. Like us on this forum. But little trucks have been around for a long time. Back in the 80s I loved the little Toyota trucks, four wheel drive. That was cool, to me. As was said above, Maverick will fade into the crowd in a couple of years and all the guys and gals that paid 5-15k over sticker will be having second thoughts.
Gotta go with ... Cool! Moreover, I think it has the kind of "cool" appeal of, say, a 64 1/2 Mustang ... or a Model T ... and if the marketing remains savvy, I'm betting it'll be a lot longer before there's any "fading" ... just sayin' ! ;)

Love your story. Made me laugh at times because us BB created some of that Need For Speed. Now we just want great gas mileage with power getting on the freeway without getting a Semi up our butt. My Mav Hybrid does it.
BB means ?

Driven and owned a lot of cool and unique cars over the years and the Maverick gets the most attention. It’s not because it’s cool; it’s because of the value, and the demand for that value. I got an XL for 23,800 out the door and put OEM xlt looking wheels on it. It looks more expensive than it is and it gives more practicality and value than the expectation of the price point.

Other “cool” cars were an SRT-4, C6, Ram SST Pace Truck, Mini Cooper S, spec ‘93 Miata LE, and others

I don’t know. It’s an easy vehicle to market, kind of its own niche right now but there are a lot of pissed off people on this forum getting crapped on by unscrupulous dealers. A lot of people are deciding it may not be worth the ass whoopin to get one.

I'm quite sympathetic to that viewpoint ... and believe we have seen that sentiment expressed repeatedly here ... and with justification!

Consider this: I just got back from an outing, where I saw a newer car that was unmistakably patterned after a '65 Mustang Fastback ... that's right, the current iteration of that same 'ole pony car! Some ideas, some vehicles, have long lasting appeal.

Maybe I'm foolhardy to compare and prognosticate a 50+ year run for this model, too ... it does seem reckless, but that is exactly what I wanted to convey. This is, like the Mustang, a really, exceptionally Good Idea.

So maybe I agree with you, if you're saying these vehicles sell themselves. Perhaps my original post should have said, " ... if the marketing remains BECOMES savvy, it'll be a lot longer before there's any fading .... "

One more thing? A lot of people are essentially reporting, "I paid MSRP it was worth the wait!"

It’s new and it’s cheap. In about three years when the new wears off and the price trends upward they won’t be as in demand and will fade into the landscape along with the sea of other offerings.

When a vehicle is all new there is always an initial rush for people to want them which usually wanes around the third year of production. Maverick is unique also in that it holds incredible value so that increases demand as well. Maverick is Ford’s Corolla only with more practicality (towing and bed) for about the same money.
Nah, I think they will stick around and keep their popularity. For the exact reason stated in his last paragraph. Now you don’t have to choose between a 10 year old Tacoma with 100,000 miles or a cheap Hyundai. You can get a brand new maverick wirh a warranty and save some gas money too.

ROTFL. The Maverick is anti-cool. It's a drab, cheap, unimaginative remake of the equally cheap 2010 Ranger in my driveway right now. I think people are interested because Americans love trucks, and Americans love cheap. And the Maverick is a cheap truck.

Maybe the Maverick is so extremely uncool that it messes with our brains and we perceive it as cool because we just can't process that much uncool?

I think my Maverick is a cool truck. I buy for utility not flash, a vehicle is for transportation, not for showing off. None the less, I am very happy that the Maverick is flashy, and, to me, a very cool ride.

I forgot to add that I'll miss my drab, uncool Ranger, which has been my faithful companion for 12 years, 105,000 miles, and living in three different states.

Me too ... 21 years, 94,000 miles ... hoping the 2022 Maverick will assuage any remorse

I think the auto market at large has really steered away from practicality, fewer and fewer hatchbacks and wagons, nothing similar to the Honda Element. Instead the market (esp at lower price points) is flooded with compact SUVs which carry people well but not much else.

I think the strong reaction to the Maverick is evidence of pent up demand for practical (cheap up buy, cheap to own and able to carry some cargo) vehicles.

I'm sure not everyone considers the Maverick cool but there's a reason used Elements have a cult following nowadays and I'd bet those people definitely think the Maverick is cool.

While much of it's cool factor is subjective, I agree with most of that. However I take exception to the comment about the 2.5's comparison to a Mustang GT of 20 years ago regarding 0-60. Let's go further back when I was driving my two-tone "88 5.0 with a 5-speed manual and limited slip differential. I never put it on a dyno or actually measured it off the line to 60 but the damn thing was fast and at around 4000 rpm was really at the sweet spot of torque and acceleration. Of course that proves nothing but the following facts pretty much do: The '88 GT 5.0 hatchback had a curb weight of 2800 lbs and a hp rating of 225 with a power/weight ratio of 0.80 hp/10 lbs. Torque was also around 300 lb/ft. Compare that to the '22 Maverick 2.5 turbo which at 3600 lbs pushed by 250 hp yields a P/W ratio of 0.70 hp/ 10 lbs. It doesn't sound like much but it makes the '88 GT the undisputed champion in that race. Just saying.
