I wait till the light comes on, I think it keeps the gas fresher that way. I can go another 30 miles after the light comes on, Tested it.Most cars/trucks have fuel pump in gas tank . Uses fuel as a coolant for fuel pump . overheating and need for repair may happen prematurely with constant low fuel levels imo . I keep gas tank at least half full . top off if hurricanes coming to Florida . Also top off liquid spirits.
I have a Costco close to work so the timing is easy. Maybe every other week. This, but only when I'm at or below half a tank - unless I know I have a trip coming up.
Never leave home and you'll never run out of gas. Or get in an accident. So staying home is better. My Grandpas words of wisdom “Fill up at a half tank and you will never run out of gas”![]()

This is not the case with today's designs.I agree fuel is a coolant and lubricant. Go around corners fast hard acceleration or braking can starve a pump briefly and cause heat and wear. Ive replaced plenty because of this.
How does one do that? Walk the 50 miles after the tank is empty? Hitchhike?Type E+
I always go 50 miles past empty then fill.

Lunchtime on a workday makes it easy. No line and I get lunch there.I’d go to Costco but the closest one to me depending on the time of day is 30-45 mins away and it’s usually 20 cars deep. I downloaded the Upside app and get cash back on fill ups.
There's ~2.5 gallons in the tank when the needle hits "E".How does one do that? Walk the 50 miles after the tank is empty? Hitchhike?
