My EB sounds like a cross between a sewing machine and a moped but I love the MPG’s and it looks good sewing down the road!

It's interesting - I find that the XLTs built in late 2021 were much louder than for instance my 5/23/22 build date FX4/Lariat -

It sounds like the paint shakers at Home Depot.

As noted by others, you are hearing the fuel pump and injectors. Most car companies are using their own variation of a 2.0 direct injected turbo, and I have yet to see one that is actually quiet. This is totally normal

The valve noise you hear is actually the high pressure fuel pump.
This is the correct answer. The high pressure fuel pump makes it sound like a diesel. This is unfortunately a cheap vehicle and there's virtually no sound deadening material used on any trim level. Thankfully it's not too expensive or too difficult to install yourself if it really bugs you.

This is about as close as I can describe :) It's actually pretty accurate.

Really? Time for a major tune up. Of course, I drive mine in Eco most of the time. Does noise levels change much with transmission mode????

I presume acoustic windshield matter little??????

From my understanding the acoustic windshield is there more for the B&O sound system and probably to help mitigate wind noise. Since engine noise is coming through the firewall and not the windshield I doubt the acoustic glass is doing anything at all to help address the engine noise.

Also, the modes do much more than alter transmission shift points. They change the throttle mapping and I'm sure to some extent ignition timing and possibly on the ecoboost models the electronically actuated wastegate. I doubt the modes have any affect on noise.

In my lariat I have a hard time hearing engine except when at less than 5-8 mph.

They asked what the engine sounds like - open the hood and listen, it seriously sounds like paint shakers :) Not too noticable when driving but the ecoboost engines sound terrible when you're listening to them outside of the car.
