To increase engine compartment airflow and allow oil or other combustible fluids to drain out rather than pool and potentially risk fire in the event of a catastrophic engine failure.
that sounds a bit like too much "in an abundance of caution"

Well, a simple fix like this "in an abundance of caution" can be better than waiting for customers to burn alive in a vehicle fire. (Note the intentional use of the word "can". I haven't done a cost-benefit analysis of this particular instance.)

That is that rectangular opening for? Looks like an easily removable piece has been removed. Does it line up with the oil drain plug? So you don't have to remove the entire shield to drain the oil? (Though you would still have to remove the entire shield to do a proper oil change with oil filter change...)

It's where a duct is installed on the EcoBoosts to direct air to help cool the AWD PTU or power takeoff unit; the gearbox assembly where power is split and turned 90 degrees for the rear driveshaft. It's close but not really beneath the hybrid engine's oil drain plug.
